WizzAir - New Baggage policy

Wizzair's new baggage policy is just a way for them to make more money from passengers.

"Airlines, including Wizz Air, have experienced overcrowded aircraft cabins in recent years owing to excessive numbers of bags being brought on board. Not only does this result in an unpleasant onboard experience, but it also results in significant delays, inconveniencing all passengers.

To address this issue we have been trialling an innovative cabin baggage policy, introducing 2 types of cabin baggage, since the beginning of August. Following the positive outcomes of the trial, Wizz Air will roll out this policy across its network from 24 October 2012. The one cabin bag per passenger policy will remain unchanged.

Wizz Air hopes that this new cabin baggage policy will incentivise passengers to bring smaller bags on board the aircraft. With fewer large items, the cabin will be less crowded, the onboard experience will be improved and Wizz Air’s solid on-time performance will be maintained for the benefit of all passengers.

Wizz Air expects to derive cost-savings from this initiative. Fewer bags mean less fuel spend, which helps Wizz Air to keep fares low every day. For new bookings on flights departing from 24 October, all Wizz Air fares will be discounted by €5* to share the expected cost savings with our passengers. "

Bet it will not be long before other airlines jump on the bandwaggon..

So what is the new policy? The one bag per passenger policy was already there.

I did read (and post here) a few weeks back, that Wizz had introduced a smaller bag limit on just one route.
Dimensions have been reduced by a few cms.on flights to Katowice. It didn't (as yet) apply to other flights.
That's all I saw, but as already stated it was a few weeks ago.

Email I've just received (Wizz e-newsletter)....

New cabin baggage policy improves travel experience and offers 5 EUR saving

Dear Passenger,

Airlines, including Wizz Air, have experienced overcrowded aircraft cabins in recent years owing to excessive numbers of bags being brought on board.

For new bookings on flights departing from 24 October, all Wizz Air fares will be discounted by €5 to share the expected cost savings with our passengers.

(*Minimum discounted total price is €8.99 one-way, inclusive of taxes and maximum booking fee. Large cabin bag and checked-in bag are subject to additional fees.)

So what are the two types of cabin bags?

1. Small cabin bag:

If your cabin bag is of size 42x32x25cm or smaller it can be taken on-board free of charge. A school backpack or laptop bag that fits under the seat in front of you would typically meet this requirement.

2. Large cabin bag:

If your cabin bag is larger than the dimensions of a small cabin bag, you can take it on-board for a €10 online fee, which you can choose to pay when booking your flight or add it to your booking at a later stage. Your large cabin bag still needs to fit easily into the overhead compartments of the cabin and so it should be no larger than 56x45x25cm (IATA standard size)

The fee for a large cabin bag is €10 if you pay online before you travel. Wizz Air encourages all passengers to decide about the bag type they wish to carry at home and purchase this option online up to 3 hours before departure. If you pay at the airport, the fee is €20 at check-in or €30 at the gate. Purchase online in advance and save 50% or more!

The new cabin baggage policy will apply to all flights booked on or after 4 October 2012 for travel from 24 October 2012 onward. If you booked a flight before 4 October 2012, you may take a large cabin bag on-board free of charge.

The policy already applies to flights between Katowice and London Luton and will continue to apply without interruption.

This new policy is not applicable on flights to and from Ukraine, with the exception of Budapest-Kiev and London Luton-Kiev. This policy does not apply to flights operated by Wizz Air Ukraine (WAU).

We look forward to seeing you on your next flight!

Great. Many forget that while the overhead lockers are a convenience, they are not the baggage hold. I'd like to see the dimensions of hand luggage made even smaller, but then perhaps I'm prejudiced as I was hurt quite badly when an overhead locker finally gave up the struggle to contain all the excess baggage, came open during a bumpy flight and a case flew out, across the aisle and landed on my shoulder.

I standby the rule that if you can afford a ticket you can afford to put your luggage in the hold and ensure that your fellow passengers are not at risk.

My overhead luggage is only ever a soft small backpack with a change of clothing and copies of my documents.

Yes, the new rules are as per battybilly's #3. I had to double check as I'll be flying with Wizzair next month.
Hand baggage max size today: 55x40x20 cm
From 24th Oct 2012:
  • small: 42 x 32 x 25 cm
  • large: 56 x 45 x 25 cm (add. charge)
My suitcase is 3 cm wider and 3 cm longer than "small". Will see how that works.

I didn't know about the €5 discount and was surprised with lower ticket price than listed, when I booked my ticket. Anyway, I paid SEK 98 (€ 11.40) for return Stockholm-Gdansk-Stockholm. For comparison, return bus ticket to/from Skavsta airport will cost me SEK 249.

I honestly think it's a good idea. Many people generally travel with far too much stuff anyway.
I can easily get away with a smaller size bag from now on.

I took the flight last Wednesday. It was problem free.
I had paid for the flight ticket SEK 98 (return), and that was it. However, the date Nov 24, when Wizzair introduced their new hand luggage rules, applied to those who booked their flights after that date. I'd booked before Nov 24, and my "overdimensional' hand luggage was therefore ok.
They have now a double frame at the gate, for the two sizes of hand luggage, and it has to fit in. The larger one is at a fee, and the smaller one is small, free of charge.

Hy,
I also bought ticket before those new rules about large cabin baggage.
But now, 1 week before flight, all the time I'm receiving an email from Wizzair about paying 10e fee for large cabin bag.
I'm not sure if I even have to pay and if I have to pay where can I do it, because I can't find where...

Hi - and welcome to Thorn Tree.

The is a mention on Wizz's website about the applicable new charges and when you booked.
If you booked before a certain date you don't pay. If you booked after it.... You do.

I admit the situation is confusing at the moment.
I suggest you look at your bording card while you're checking in online. Find the information next to "online check-in". On mine it says: "large hand luggage: 1". That's even if I haven't booked and paid for large hand luggage, but according to the rules at the time of booking, ie. before Oct 24.
ps. I flew out on on Nov 7, and will be flying back Nov 16.

kylian501,
I checked at the gate last Friday and got it confirmed that only to flights booked before Oct 4 the old rules aplied. If you booked after that day you'll be charged for 'large' hand luggage. Oct 24 was the date when the new rules became effective.
