Train Prague to Bratislava
I'll post my question first and then give a bit of a bio about me:Q..I'm using the LP Eastern Europe Guide; the Guide gives a price of 500Kc from Prague to Bratislava. I just put my probable departing time from Prague to Bratislava into the cd.cz website and received a price of 380Kc.
If I buy my ticket in advance is it cheaper? How do I receive the ticket is it an e-ticket to my email? Do I use my Passport # (Canadian) on the website when ordering the ticket?
I'm Canadian late 50's and Prague is the start on my trip. It will be overland with the final destination being Istanbul. I'll be staying at the Adam and Eva Hostel in the Zborovska to start.I'll usually only book the arrival hostel and then make flexible plans from there.
I sort of know how many days I'll spend in Prague, hence the question about the train.
Q...Czech Republic and Slovakia like Canada are Nations with a passion for Ice Hockey. Would anyone know the Czech or Slovak webites where I could find the current team schedules. I would especially be interested in seeing a Junior hockey game. In Canada that would be players that are in the 18-20 years age group. Competive exciting hockey in Canada at less than 10% of the cost of the Professional NHL league. I'll be there so I thought seeing a game would be fun.
I'll try to ask country specific questions as I go. I have 35 days to make it to Istanbul. The basic route with includes lots of outdoor stuff and architecture and cuture would be.....
Prague/ SLOVAKIA(Bratislava--High Tatras)/ POLAND(Zakopane--Krakow(including Auschwitz & Czestochowna)--Przemysl/ UKRAINE(Lviv--Kamyanets Podilsky--Chernivtsi)/ ROMANIA(Suceava--Brasov--Bucharest)/ BULGARIA(Veliko Tarnovo--Plovdiv)/ Istanbul......I leave in 12 days.

LP prices are not exact. Different trains can have different prices, especially sleeper trains. There's not usually a discount for booking in advance. Day trains usually have plenty of space.One way to get these tizx in advance is to order from Duetsche Bahn, pay by card and have the tickets mailed to you.
Nice itinerary. I've been to all these places separately but never had the opportunity for a long trip. Enjoy it!

Using the trains in The Czech Republic are very cheap so the price of 380kc seems about right.I used the Pargue -Bratislava train in May this year though I was only going to Brno,the train was very good and not anyway near full ,I just bought my tickets on the day of travel with no problems.
I can reccommend Brno as a stop of point for a day or so, lovely town , some great achitectural firsts there and the Dam area just outside the city a wonderful area to stroll in.

Yes Ice Hockey is the ~1 sport and if on the TV will be shown in every bar with a TV, as to live games I just don't know but just keep googling and I am sure you will find a website,if I find anything I will post it here.
Not wishing to promote another websit but Trip advisor has some very good destination specific forums that may also be of use to you.

There are a few trains between Prague and Bratislava with different prices. The cheapest ticket costs 381 Czech Crowns, the most expensive about 540 CZK. A sleeper or couchette is of course extra. There´s no advance booking discount. An electronic ticket can be bought on the Czech Railways website, using a debit/credit card, the poroblem is however, that the site is apparently in czech language only.If you are going to the High Tatras, why not take a direct train Prague-Poprad, that would save you some time (unless you want to see Bratislava of course). There´s a direct bus from Poprad to Zakopane, however, when we took the bus a couple of years ago, they only accepted payment in polish zloty., because it is a polish bus. The bus driver could understand some basic english, but could not speak a single word of english. so make sure that you have some zloty to avoid hassle.

Try to buy in advance CD Promo ticket. It is discounted ticket, but you have to buy in advance. You can you eshop or buy on the train stations, but on the train station is some small additional fee.In the reference of hockey - of course visit more attractive czech league (sorry slovak bro's :-) ). These days some stars fron NHL playing here because of lockout in NHL (for example team Kladno with Jaromir Jagr).

Thanks for the timely replys.It seems from your responses that I can save at 30% if I buy the train ticket on-line and in advance. I'll make a decision on that this week. The cd.cz train site is a good site; the Énglish language option works well. At a minimum I can find the departure times for the Prague-Bratislava, which will help my planning.
As to hockey, I did find with info about Pragues two teams, HC Slavia Praha & HC Sparta Praha. I think this is the Elite Czech League?
@ #4...That a great site and what I was looking for. I'll be travelling with a netbook and I'll put the Slovak Junior Extraliga site in my favourites. When I get to Prague I'll ask someone at the hostel to translate and hopefully be able to plan to see a game in Slovakia, maybe in Bratislava or Poprad.

grant007, if you are Ice hockey fan, you can see KHL matches in Prague (Lev Praha) and in Bratislava (Slovan Bratislava) www.hcslovan.sk (unfortunately only in Slovak)BR

I spent 4 days in Prague and really enjoyed my time there. I didn't get to see a hockey game the dates just didn't work out. However I did see the Czech Philharmonic(90 musicans) at the Rudolfinum one night; it was amazing. The next night I went to the Opera House by the Central Train Station and saw the Ballet, Giselle; also amazing.I spent two nights in Bratislava and then immediately to the town of Zdiar in the Tatras. That was about 10 days ago when we had all that blue sky weather. Great hiking in Zdiar, did a hike to Siroke Sedlo(Pass), then a minor peak(Hlupy).
Then on to Poland. I'm now in Lviv Ukraine. It's been a great trip so far.
Yes, just showed up and bought my ticket Prague-Bratislava for 700Kc. I could of saved almost 300Kc if I bought it in advance on the web a week before hand.
