Travelling Sichuan in winterHi there,
Planning to go back to Sichuan since my last trip in January 2011 coz it was just fabulous. I went up from Yunnan and then up to Sichuan, got sick in Chengdu, so didn't see Western Sichuan as I planned.
I'm planning to go back (and take my fiancee with me) 16-29 December 2012. My circuit itinerary:
Chengdu -> Lushan -> Luding -> Kangding -> Litang -> Tagong -> Danba -> Rilong/Siguniang -> Chengdu.
1) What are the roads like there in December? Will bus schedules be reliable (bearing in mind "reliable" is relative in China)
a) Litang would be the climax of this trip - given its culture and location. Would anyone know if it's accessible at that time of the year?
2) Whilst cold, will the weather be dangerously cold?
3) Suggestions/comment for that itinerary for a FOURTEEN day trip?

1Buses are available in late December, but schedules are never reliable on that type of mountain roads.
You've seen yourself that Litang would be the climax of the trip ;) If you don't have rain as during the other seasons the snow will slow you down too. Be aware that the hotels will be very cold with electric blankets as the main source of heating available. Litang has frequent electric blackouts during winter, and then water will freeze in your room. I've experienced that once in April in Litang.
The conditions in Tagong will be better not at least because you can leave at any time in direction of Danba or Kangding, while once in Litang you depend on road conditions and availability of tickets.
Litang can be visited in late December, but if you want to go out and see the place you'll need to have clothing for the occasion.

2Did some great travel through the Yi territory south of the Chengdu plains last winter about exactly that time. Spectacular scenery, though some roads blocked some of the time, and transport can be a hassle - but pretty amazing. Photos at http://picasaweb.google.com/walter.stanish
I highly recommend Zigong. I regret not spending a night there to check out the dinosaur park in addition to the salt mining museum, the cool old architecture, and dinner of the far side of the river amongst beautiful stonework.

thanks for the reply and suggestions. knowing transport to western sichuan can be tricky makes it even more elusive and rewarding if i do end up being there.
but in case there are political issues and can't get transport there, i'd like to know if anyone can give me suggestions around chengdu to do for 2 weeks. i thought about exploring aba - would that be too cold up north? what about east sichuan?
