Lima to Santiago

Hey all!

I am planning my 3month South America trip and have a few questions.

I was wondering how long it would take to get from Lima to Santiago? I will be backpacking so buses and trains with stop overs along the way. I'm leaving a friend in Lima on the 13th of Feb and need to catch a flight home on the 26th of Feb in Santiago - is 13 days enough time to get from A to B??? I do want to see parts of Chile but I know I don't have much time..

Also, is bus or train better? And what companies are recommended that are a good price and reasonably comfortable?

What's the best route?

I know there's a lot of questions, but help would be appreciated! This is my first time traveling and I'm going alone so freaking out a little.

Thanks :)

Forget the train: there are more bus and they are cheaper and faster.

2 weeks in Peru and Chile ? What do you want to do ?

By bus you can do it in about 3 days travelling Lima to Tacna and then Arica to Santiago (Both buses travelling overnight) so I guess it depends on what you have in mind along the way.

A few hours by plane.

If you haven't seen much of Peru, than see some of that. Or Catch a flight to the closest border town. and Then see bits of the Atacama, and fly down.

It's difficult to give any advice without knowing what you'll have seen and visited before you leave Lima.
I'd suggest going to southern Peru, Cuzco or Arequipa, from there through Bolivia (La Paz and Uyuni) to Salta, and further via Mendoza to Santiago. Alternative route, from Arequipa via Tacna/Arica to San Pedro de Atacama and from there to Santiago.
The problem is that it would have to be a bit rushed, so you'd have to make your choices which places en route to skip.
The route along the coast (Panamericana) is pretty much boring all the way.

Thanks for all the replies!!

I will have spent time in Peru before leaving because I am doing the Inca Trail. I'll also be going through Bolivia to get to Peru (passing through Santa Cruz, Sucre, Uyani, then to La Paz, Lake Titicaca and to Cuzco) I'm meeting a friend in Cuzco to do the Inca Trail and then we will make our way to Lima.

Does this sound ok? Or Does going down through Bolivia on my way back to Santiago sound better?

Also, what kinda of budget would you say is ok for a 3month trip of this kind - staying in hostels, and living on a budget?

thank you!!
