I am planning a trip to Somaliland, but have never been in that region before and find that a lot of the information I can find is quite contradicting. I have travelled a lot in several African countries but never this region. So the big question, now that the Hargeisa Airport is closed. Is it safe to travel between Berbera and Hargeisa? Can I arrange pickup through a hotel, or how is it normally done? Flying out from London, is the best way via Addis Ababa?
Any information is much appreciated.
Thanks!!

Given Somali circumstances. Somaliland is safe, and there are busses between Berbera and Hargeisa. I think they took about 2,5 to 3 hours each way - I have no experience with the shuttle, when I was there, flying into Hargeisa was no problem. Coming from London, you can either fly to Addis or to Nairobi, both countries have a number of flight connections (the cheapest option from Kenya includes a stop in Mogadishu, even with AMISOM gaining ground I would not really recomend to take that route)3
Usually there are cheaper connections to the UK from Nairobi, not Addis, but check around and see what deals you can find. The flights from Berbera to Addis or Nairobi are about the same price but check these also to see if it makes a difference overall. If you don't want to take the airport shuttle (or miss it for some reason), larger hotels in Hargeisa can arrange a pick-up in Berbera for you.
