Cheaper areas of Italy close to airportHi,
Looking at having our wedding in Italy next year. We are finding prices in the more popular areas (Amalfi, Tuscany and Lazio) are expensive.
What are the cheaper parts of the country? Looking for somewhere that is within 2 hrs of one of these Airports: Rome, Bologna, Pisa, Naples
Thanks in advance, JK

1I seem to remember Pisa being pretty cheap, in comparison to other towns and regions.
However, others may know of places even less expensive.

2Naples is definitely the cheapest of the cities you mentioned, with the exception of the very touristic areas along the Amalfi Coast. Still, depending by your budget and by the period of the year, you can find affordable places almost in any of the areas. Give us some more detail and we can try to help you better.

3Thanks folks. As it will be in late April, I was thinking the further South the better, somewhere within an hour and a half od Naples would be perfect.
How about Cilento or the upper part of Campania? Any specific areas there that might be nice? Possibly looking at booking a large villa. Once I pick and area, I'll take a look on some of the vacation rental sites for a villa.

5You mentioned Cilento, which is beautiful and cheaper than the cities. Palinuro is gorgeous, and nearby places too: Castellabate, Agropoli (near the Paestum archaeological area), Marina di Camerota.
In Tuscany you can have a look at Castiglioncello, a popular sea resort where a lot of rich people had their villas in the early 19th century, and it should be affordable in April since beach season has not started yet. Also the Versilia area (Viareggio) or the countryside on the way to Lucca should have some suitable location.
Also near Rome I may suggest you some seaside location since out the beach season the prices will be lower: Santa Marinella, Santa Severa, Fregene, Anzio/Nettuno and even Sabaudia could be places to look at.
Have a look at the map to see where these places are located and tell us what you think.

6ugh- a destination wedding. A pain in the ass for everybody involved just to meet the self-indulgent requirements of the couple.
And have you already looked at the paperwork required for a wedding in Italy? It may not be as easy as you think.
Do your guests (and yourself!) a favour and get married at home, and then go to Italy on honeymoon.

7Thanks Flapic and Battybilly
MTL if you were familiar with my home country of Ireland, you would know the weather is very erratic and undependable, and wedding venues here are very much overpriced. Also, a wedding abroad sorts the wheat from the chaff, so only the wedding guests that really want to go end up going.

8Apparently, you're finding the wedding venues in Italy overpriced, also.

If you don;t want to spend the money, simply elope.
Anyway, have you already looked at the paperwork?

10@Jaykay81 @MTL: I don't know how it works in Ireland, but in Italy if the marrying couple invites people to attend the wedding at a location different than the one they live, they have room and flights payed!

Where is a link to a site offering the 'Much cheaper' villas in Naples you mention?

That's why i called it a 'A pain in the ass for everybody involved just to meet the self-indulgent requirements of the couple'.

13Some more issues to think about: is the wedding religious or civil?
If religious a villa can be fine for the party but the celebration must be held in church, and churches must be booked with a large advance. Plus several documents must be prepared, and it's hard to do it from abroad unless using a specialized agency.
@Battybilly: I never said I had a site offering cheap villas in Naples. I said that among those listed Naples is the cheapest city.
