Advice for Vietnam North to South travelHi all, currently in Thailand and then on to Laos. Looks like we will have about 22 days for Vietnam (but also including Angkor Wat, which I am figuring 3 days for). So 18-19 days Vietnam.
I am thinking (in order):
Hanoi (2 nights)
Bai Tu Long or Cat Ba cruise (1-2 nights)
Return Hanoi (1-2 nights)
Mai Chau (1-2 nights) - trekking through Mai Chau Lodge
Ninh Binh (2 nights) - cycle around Tam Coc, Cuc Phuong visit, Phat Diem, etc.
Phong-Nha Ke (Phong Na Farmstay) - 3 nights
Hue (1 night) and Hoi An (2-3)
Fly Danang to Siem Reap
Fly Siem Reap to Saigon where we already have flight out planned on October 30th at night.
Just curious how people would allocate days and whether or not it would be better to do the Hanoi area in a loop (Han-MC-NB-cruise at CB/BTL) and then fly to Hue. Or if it makes more sense to do it as I wrote above. I know we can get a cheap shuttle to MC from Hanoi and then a car to Ninh Binh, just not sure it makes sense to do 11 hours bus/train from Ninh Binh to Phonh Na area.
Thanks a lot for any advice.

1That looks a pretty good itinerary for the limited amount of time.
I would say that Hue is worth more than one full day, especially if you intend to see the citadel, the other parts of town (alongside the river next to Hen Island, for example) and the tombs and temples tour. Perhaps add a day there and take away one from Hoi An.
Re: 30th October. Are you going in to HCMC or staying at the airport. If you are spending the night in the town of HCMC you will require a multi-entry visa.
Good luck and enjoy

2Thanks man. We got ME visas in Bangkok. Will stay in HCMC since flying from Siem Reap to HCMC and then catching our int'l flight home seemed dicey. Will end in Saigon and just do as many days as we can there.
Another poster suggested skipping Hue and Hoi An and just doing a Mekong Delta 3 day'er instead. Thoughts? I've heard good things about Hue and Hoi An, so not sure I want to skip them.

4Your itinerary is great and i wonder how you can figure such a wonderful program from north to south for you trip like that. From Ninh Binh to Quang Binh Province (Phong Nha farmstay) is just 6 hours by bus as i remember 'cuv the distance of them is just 570km. So it's waste of time to return Hanoi to take flight to Hue.
I think you shouldn't skip Hue and Hoian because they are both attractive destinations of Central Vietnam. And why don't you spend 2 nights in Hue, maybe you can take one day visit DMZ - a very historical place and one day Hue city tour before going to Hoian as your plan.
For your reference if you would like to find a good hotel in Hue with reasonable price: Mondial Hotel Hue is a good choice for you.

5Second going to Hue and Hoi An. Really lovely places. Don't skip them for the Mekong, though the Mekong (one night should be fine) is also great. You could take a motorbike trip up to Dalat if you wanted to do something different and assuming you were planning a couple of days more in Vietnam. Saigon is worth a night as well.

6I'm no expert on Vietnam, simply planning a trip myself, is the weather. It's coming on the rainy season in hue and hoi an, correct? So perhaps it's best to stay flexible.

7Hi all, thanks again for the great advice. So we amended slightly. Basically just skipping Ninh Binh. Same itinerary as above but now we will have an extra day for each of Hue, Hoi An, PN Farmstay, Angkor or Saigon (but not all). Just seems to add flexibility and I've been told with Mai Chau and PN Farmstay on the itinerary that skipping NB is not a crime.
So we are planning to do Hanoi-Cat Ba cruise-Hanoi-MC-fly to Dong Hoi. Then pick up same itinerary as above.
Look forward to your thoughts - thanks.
