Costa rican colons in cuba?Hi! We r gonna make our way tomorrow from costa rica to cuba and cobsidering which currency we should be with. We have the option of taking either dollars or colons. On 1 side im not sure that i can switch colons over there, on tge other side i know that for exchanging dollars they take 10%. but... From the casa we r going to stay they told us that we'll get discount if we pay by dollars and another american guy that lives for 8 years in costa rica tokd me they would like to have dollars. So... R dollars recommended only for "unofficial businesses"?

1See here what you can change for our CUC (convertible pesos):
Discounts from a Casa for paying in USD?
I am very curious.

3Only currencies exchangeable those at the link.
Some locals do prefer to get paid in USD as they have personal plans. But usually it is the equivalent of what they would charge in CUC. So it is the first time I hear about a “discount” although I am guessing what the discount could be.
BTW I am a local and I love CUC....lol...

5It would depend upon how much would it cost you (if anything) the long process of multiple changes from Colons to EUR or CDN compared with what you will get bringing only your USD.
Consider that upon landing you will receive –if changing USD cash- CUC 87.15 for every $100.00 USD.
BTW do you have a local bank Visa logo card no affiliated with any US bank or subsidiary?

7Only Visa logo cards can be used on ATM.
You have brought a very interesting question for me now: If Israeli CC can be cashed over the counter (presuming no affiliation at all with US banks)>I will ask one of my Israel clients right now. Some were in here last week. I will ask also a couple of Israeli travel agents I am in contact with. Thanks for your question. I hope someone else has an answer right now.

8Anyway my credit card is international.
And another q: can u give me a general recommended budget for a day in cuba? We r pretty much have budget limits so we wont be eating in expensive restaurants etc. but still want to see dights and museums. If our casa charge 30 cuc for 1 night so 100 cuc for a day is enough?

9You use the word “we”. How many?
I am guessing two but if that’s the case you are thinking about 35.00 cuc per person? Too tight IMHO.
But there are experts in this board who enjoy showing off about how cheap they can do things in Cuba. Let’s call them….lol..
I am the wrong person to ask. I am a Cuban travel agent. I want you to leave most of your money in our Economy….lol..

Colons not accepted
USD has 10% penalty for exchange to CUC
It is unlikely that USD will be of use other than for that one casa - you can of course exchange in banks/cadcas for CUC
High probability of doing a USD -to somethingelse in CR and then to CUC in Cuba being no better financially than simply taking USD.
Israel Mastercard may work inside bank/cadeca (but not in ATM) provided it has no however indirect links with a US company.
100CUC/day for 2 sounds fine but have access to more in case of mishaps!

12Alright! Thanks guys! I think that ill arrange the money in advance and not going to trust the cuban banks that my mastercard will be accepted. Ill do double exchange colon to euros and then cuc, sounds like the better option
We r on budget ( yes, we is 2 people) but dont worry, we wont miss anything

13You can see actual rates from a Cuban bank here - http://www.bc.gov.cu/Espanol/tipo_cambio_METROPOLITANO.asp
If you find what rates the banks there offer you can do the math(s).
Google search Al Dieste's article on Havana on $50 a day - it is a little out of date but gives some idea.
