4.5 days in El Calafate/ El Chaltan

Hello,

My husband and I will be travelling around Patagonia for 4.5 days in early Nov. We plan to split the time between El Calafate and El Chaltan. Our flight from BA to El Calafate will land at 10 am on the first day.

We are thinking of spending day 1 and day 2 in El Calafate and heading to El Chaltan Days 3 and 4 to do some treks. on Day 5 we need to get back to El Calafate to get our flight at 13:00 to Salta.

Can you please recommend an itinerary for 4.5 days in these places? We do want to see the glacier and our interested in a few not too intense hikes. Could we stay on an Estancia in these days?

Many thanks
Sue

I always like to be close to the airport on the day I'm flying out. You won't have much time that day - so maybe it should be a morning for walking around El Calafate. You'd probably want to leave El Calafate by 10:30-11:00.

Maybe do something like this:

Day 1. arrive. Afternoon drive/bus to El Chalten. Stay in El Chalten.
Day 2. Day hike to Fitzroy viewpoint (start early). Stay in El Chalten.
Day 3. Day hike to Cerro Torre viewpoint. Late drive/bus to El Calafate. Stay in El Calafate.
Day 4. Perito Moreno land and/or boat trip. Stay in El Calafate.
Day 5. explore stores in El Calafate. Drive to airport.

excellent advice above. Fully agree with nilsy. You really need only 1 day in El Calafate to see the glaciar.

The bus companies operating in El Chalten will drop you directly back to the El Chalten airport to catch your flight at 1pm. It sounds like you already have some good tips but be sure to try the traditonal Locro at the Micro Brewery after a hard day trekking. Also try the Chocolateria and eat at the La Tapera restaurant and be sure to try the bread. El Chalten is my favourite place in South America and I have been travelling for a very long time. Have fun!!!!
Plenty of hostels to stay at but book ahead. I always stay at Albuerge Patagonia.
Not many Estancias in this area, which are a reasonable price anyway. One day is enough in El Calafate but be sure to do the Glacier, including the mini trekking.
