RTW 2013/2014 Itinerary Feeback

Hi All,

I am looking for feedback on the below itinerary. Primarily looking for feedback about schedule feasibility (# of locations as well as climate at the time I'm looking at), recommendations on places that should be more/less time that I've scheduled and cost. Obviously I am not going to be sticking to this plan to the day, but am using it as an outline.

Thanks!

Hi descendets!

Welcome to TT!

-Croatia | 10/2/2013 | 7 | 10/9/2013 | N | 70 | 490

Croatia will join the Schengen Area on July 1st 2013 so unless there's some last minute change, it'll be a Schengen Country on your travel dates. That means you would be spending more than 90 days in the Schengen Area so you'll have to modify that part of your trip.

US | 7/6/2013 | 35 | 8/10/2013 | | 80 | 2800
(...)
Russia | 8/10/2013 | 0 | 8/10/2013 | N | 70 | 0
-Finland | 8/10/2013 | 0 | 8/10/2013 | Y | 140 | 0
-Sweden | 8/10/2013 | 0 | 8/10/2013 | Y | 140 | 0
-Norway | 8/10/2013 | 0 | 8/10/2013 | Y | 140 | 0
-Ireland | 8/10/2013 | 7 | 8/17/2013 | N | 140 | 980

Are you sure you mean you want to depart from the USA on Aug 10th, arrive the same day to Russia and continue overland to Norway through Finland and Sweden before taking a flight to Ireland later the same day (i.e.: later on Aug 10th)?
BTW, You could ask in the Europe-Western Europe branch if the time you spend in Finland, Sweden and Norway would be counted as a day in the Schengen Area.

Without knowing what places do you plan to visit at each country nor what are your interests nor how do you plan to move around from country to country and from place to place, it's difficult to make more comments.

I hope you are going to Australia while you are in Oceania, not all the way back to Austria :-)

That is a lot of countries! Are you sure you want to be spending that much time travelling instead of actually seeing?

You will be spending all your time in the airplane/bus/train.

I haven't read it (I have to work as well)but it looks like around 50 countries? In a year? (maybe).

Thats a new country every week. For a year.

That makes it one of the more improbable itineraries ever seen on here.......

Personally..i think that's nuts....way way too many countries. No time for breaks, sickness, romances, and the chance to take a holiday from this ridiculous itinerary.. ( Sorry, maybe i'm being harsh today) ....

I think i'm going to pass out after looking at all the stats for 1/2 a minute. By all accounts, you could have traveled thru 4 countries in the time it too to write all the numbers down....!!!!

You obviously have a huge budget... If you could even do 1/2 of what you've suggested, you'd be doing well...

Anillos... reckon he has his own private jet or star trek energizer to do this

The budget does not appear to include travel between these countries either. Is that added in somewhere, or is that extra?

And would love to know the plan for that extraordinary day of the 10th August 2013.

Thanks for all the feedback!

First thing Russia/Finland/Sweden/Norway I won't actually be going to. I had them on the list but due to cost and other reasons I decided to not include them in my RTW so I just put them at zero days. Sorry for the confusion.

anillos_de_saturno -- Thanks for the feedback on Croatia joining the Schengen! I did not know that, really helpful info.

I do agree that it is a lot of countries, I would prefer to travel slower but there are so many countries in Europe I want to see and with the Schengen it is going to have to be a bit rushed. The other locations, S. America, and SE Asia I could probably extend. I am also considering maybe skipping some stuff in Central America as I have been there before.

Also the budget does not include pre-travel arrangements or flights between the different regions, but the daily amounts should be including any land travel between countries within the same region.

I also think I need to move some of my countries around in Europe so I'm not in Netherlands/Belgium in November. Will post a revision at some point soon but keep the feedback coming. Also I know it looks like a lot of work but I did it in a spreadsheet so all I had to input was country, number of days stayed, and price/day and the rest of the information auto-populated.

You can clearly fit in at least one more country on the 10th of august everything else looks good though

The alternative to ''it is all going to have to be a bit rushed'' is simple.

Go slower and go to fewer places.

Presumably you don't have an incurable disease which means you will never be able to travel again?

Yeah really #11 - as a NZer I can tell you to skip my country in July - it's the middle of winter - miserable. Australia is bigger than the US - going for 16 days is a waste of time.

I have no idea why you'd prioritise Bali - its Australia's Costa del Sol - expensive and in general ruined. and quite a long way from the rest of Asia on your list.

Seriously sit down and work out your priorities. Some of your countries are wrong: Scotland is part of the UK, Germany has been reunified since 1989.

Why would spend the same time in Belgium and Turkey? Turkey is a huge and fascinating, most first timers in Europe would take the train right across Belgium in a few hours, and miss not a lot.

Thanks for the suggestions midlifetravel. Good point about the weather in NZ/Aus. Maybe I want to skip these or move them to a different time. These may be good countries to visit on their own at some other point (although I will probably not have a chance to spend 3 weeks in Aus/NZ for a long time as I will likely be going back to the corporate world once I finish my travels). As for Bali I've heard good things but you are right, it may make sense to take this off the list. The Asia portion of my itinerary I've spent the least amount of time. I understand that Scotland is part of the the UK (I'll rename UK to England). Also understand that Germany is unified, just as a I was planning a route it seemed to make sense to go through Germany twice, but as my route is changing this may change as well. Also I am a big beer fan of beer so I want to spend some time in Belgium. I will consider increasing the time in Turkey though. I haven't looked at much in the country besides Istanbul

With only 3 days in Switzerland, in the Netherlands, in Austria, in Hungary and so on, you won't be visiting those countries but a city in each of those countries which is not the same. And there's an alternative to rush it: prioritize the places you want to see, enjoy them and come back in other trip(s) to visit and enjoy the rest of them.

I do think you are making the mistake of equating cities to countries (e.g. Istanbul/Turkey) . You'll also making the mistake of thinking this is your one chance to travel. If you are as addicted to travel as I am you will find ways to fit your life around it. Also you're over-planning with 18 months your plans will evolve as you travel.
