Details Ferry to ZanzibarI have backpacked from Amman Jordan (arrived in Jordan 2 days before Christmas last year) (thrown out of Syria) via Aqaba/Nuweiba, Port Said & Cairo (thrown out of Blue Nile State) to now in Dar Es Salaam over a 9 month period via over crowded public transport, walking and hitchhiking, in that time I have wrecked 2 Backpacks in succession one was brand new in Cairo, flown over from my brother in the USA. (I daren’t ask him for another one, I will have to buy local). By the way I am 70 years old (closer to 71) and travelling alone. At present I am saying 10km outside Dar, next to a large bus station on the Morogoro Road. Because the standard of accom I get here, in Dar (city) I would to pay US$60-100 where as now I pay only 30,000 Tanzania shilling (US$19.33) Just a 300 Shilling (US 19 cents) via crowded bus ride into city.
At the moment I am nursing a couple of travel injuries but within a week will head via ferry to Zanzibar. Can anyone give any details how to get there, as I don't have "the book", and English here is a lot less than Kenya.

no problem, just go down to the port and buy a ticket, they run at different times of the day so go down the day before and choose a time that suits you. Azam are the best company, and the crossing takes about 2 hours give or take half an hour.
Happy traveling, sounds like you are a pretty experienced traveler but if you want some help I can give you the number of a taxi driver I know well who won't rip you off and will help you get the ticket. P.S. always buy from the office, not the street!!!!

5Sorry, for late response. Thanks for the advice guys. I am now back in Dar after a few days in Zanzibar. I now have to wait in Dar till next Friday 12th Oct, till I can get 1st Class train to Mbeya (Tanzania) (30,100 Tanzania shillings). Yes you will say 'why did you not book in advance, before you went to Zanzibar'. I just never do, when I am ready to go, I just turn at the railway station or bus station, or just start walking in the direction I want to go and hitch a lift. Expect to be bouncing about Africa for next 2 years. By the way I am now staying at the YMCA in Dar, I have a double room. (28,000 Tanzania shillings a night, with a small breakfast, I tried to tell them, if I am paying for a double room I should get 2 breakfast).
