Tourist visa clarification
There's a lot of talk about if you need a flight out of the country to get a tourist visa to Thailand. Just went in the other day for a double entry tourist visa (in Chicago) and only had a flight from Singapore to Bangok.... no onward flight. They asked no questions at all and issued the visa without hassle.At this point this method has worked for me in Chicago and Vientiene.

No the talk has not been that - needing a flight out to get a visa. The talk has been that to get on an aircraft to Thailand from other than SEA you need a tourist visa or a ticket out within 30 days.Paul

They are both "the talk". Thai consulates in the US are known to require proof of air travel in/out as a prerequisite to issuing visas. Airlines requiring a visa or an onward ticket is the other half of the puzzle. The Thai consulate in Vientiane is a no-brainer. I got visas there back-to-back for many years.3
Getting the visa was never a issue, getting on the plane is - even with the visa in my passport they wanted to refuse check-in in Europe several times. Calling supervisors and explaining that onward flight is required for folks with no visa solved the problems, but was a hassle several times.5

last Nov 2011 in Basel/Switzerland I had to bring the copy of a bank account because I had only a flight out of Singapur to Switzerland-- otherwise no TR visa

I just applied for my double-entry tourist visa in London yesterday, the clerk glanced over the application form, took my money and told me my visa would be ready for collection in 2 days. No questions asked re. onward or return ticket.even with the visa in my passport they wanted to refuse check-in in Europe several times
I will be flying on a one-way ticket so it sounds like I might have that hassle to deal with, thank you for the heads up! This is the first time I have gotten a visa, each time in the past I have had an onward flight to KL or Phnom Penh instead.

I can assure you that this practice is alive and well at the Embassy in Washington, DC. They made me go around the corner and book a flight before they would accept my visa application. It varies from place to place.8

I've had a couple from London (including with one way tickets, including triple entries). Seems it's always nice and easy there. Gawd bless ya, Mary Poppins.

I had to produce a flight out when I got my 2 month visa in Singapore. It seems is depends on the embassy10
So, what all the above anecdotes prove is something that many of us have long known - that the one constant amongst the various Thai embassies and consulates is that there IS NO constant! Even one given office can change depending upon what day of the week it is or who receives your forms. The TIT factor is alive and well!11
why is there so much reverse polarity when it comes to the core of the problem? Even in the same thread? The problem is with the airline that checks you in, at the airport, Not with the visa issuing Embassy or Consulate and not at the arrival airport in Thailand. by the airline!!!!!12
^^ I would invite you to turn up at the Embassy of Thailand in Washington, DC and attempt to get a tourist visa without proof of onward travel. You are misguided. You will be turned away.13

#11 misses the point that everyone else seems to get - it's not a one-size-fits-all problem. It's the airline AND the particular embassy and/or any combination. It's never a problem on arrival at a Thailand airport.Reverse polarity? What's electricity got to do with it?
