Trying to ration 8 full days in Nicaragua and I was wondering what people thought of my potential itinerary:
Granada - 4 days
Ometepe - 2 days
San Juan del Sur - 2 days
I want to see the baby turtles, and will be there toward the end of November -- is it likely then? Also, I am open to swapping out San J. for a longer stay elsewhere or another destination. I live in a harbor town myself so the water isn't really a draw.

1I was for 2 days in Granada 3 times which was enough for me. Consider adding 1 day more for both Ometepe and SJDS....

2I agree with the comment above...4 days maybe a bit much in Granada. You could easily fill three days on Ometepe Island, I'd highly recommend a hike up the volcano. Have you considered Leon? It's in the opposite direction from Managua, but I'm pretty sure there are buses running directly from Granada to Leon. Also, if the turtles are a priority, you may want to consider visiting a beaches other than SJDS

4I'd up the days on Ometepe too.by the time you get there and get back,2 days is not enough to do a lot.I just had 5 days there and could have spent a lot more.
Agree with 3 days for Granada too.In only 8 days Granada and Ometepe would be enough for me...

5One less day in Granada and another day in ometepe sounds a bit better ometepe has it´s own vibe and is a beautiful and natural area. If need to do some day trips in the area i recommend http://golocalnicaragua.wix.com/nicaragua enjoy this beautiful country

7If you spend one week in this spectacular country, I recommend going south of the capital. Granada, Ometepe and San Juan Del Sur.
Day 1: Visit to the colonial city of Granada including a boat ride on the little Islands of Granada at Lake Nicaragua.
Day 2: Day trip to the city of Masaya, visiting the first national park of Nicaragua Masaya Volcano, Masaya art craft market, Catarina view point, San Juan de Oriente pottery town and canopy tour at Mombacho volcano.
Day 3: Transfer to Ometepe Island. Lunch at Moyogalpa and later walking tour in charco Verde. Enjoy the rest of the afternoon in your hotel.
Day 4: Full day trip on the island visiting Finca Magdalena, Finca El Porvenir, Playa santo domingo la piedra inculta trail, Altagracia y el ojo de agua. Or hike one of the two volcanoes Maderas volcano or Concepcion volcano. Or hike at San Ramon Waterfall.
Day 5 and 6: Transfer to San Juan Del Sur and enjoy of the beach.
Day 7: Transfer back to Managua airport or last stop before departure to your home town.

8We spent 4 days in Granada and were back there 3 weeks later for another 3 days. We loved Granada. You could spend some solid time there. Do some kayaking in the lake, visit Mombacho Volcano, do the night tour of Masaya Volcano (last erruptions doesn't allow you to see the lava at night any longer, but still very cool to be there and see the lava tubes and bats), relax at Laguna de Apoyo...tons to do in and around Granada.
Ometepe we were planning on staying just 2 nights and ended up being there for 5. The island was great. We spent time down near Santa Cruz and then up on the beaches of Santo Domingo. Take time to relax in the springs and touring around the island. The island is huge so it takes lots of time to get around, plan for it.
San Juan was a nice beach tour. Tons of gringos and English, if that is what your looking for. Worth a trip down there from Ometepe, but we were ready to move on after 3 nights. Do the rappelling tour down there! One of the best tours I have ever done.
So I think your plan looks like a pretty good one for 8 days. If you take the chicken bus down from Granada, be there early in the morning to get a seat. It can be a long trip down to Rivas standing the whole way! Enjoy...Nicaragua is amazing!
