US dollars for Argentina and Uruguay
I'm new to this forum so please forgive if I am asking something obvious. I have read on the forum and heard elsewhere something about taking US dollars to Argentina and Uruguay. When I am travelling, I am used to taking my bank card to whichever country I am going and when I arrive I use an ATM to get money. The is my first time in Argentina and Uruguay and I am wondering can anyone tell me if I can do just that or if there is some advantage I don't know about to taking American Dollars. Thanks in advance,
Gaynor

The advantage is that you can often get better rates in Argentina using good condition dollars. The other good thing about bringing some US dollar as well as your ATM cards, is that they are backup in case you have problems using the ATM with your cards, nonavailability of ATM's, or the ATM's running out of money (a common occurance on weekends). Generally, you should be okay with ATM's.

In Argentina the official rate is 4.50 pesos. ATMs and banks pay the official rate. If you exchange on the black market you get about 6.10 pesos for each American dollar.
