Driving from France to Austria in Christmas

Hello all,

We're planning to drive from France (Bordeux region) to Austria/Slovenia around Christmas time. The objective is primarily driving through any scenic drives, seeing new places and photography (particularly snowscapes). This will be spanned over 7 days and we understand that we will mostly be driving, - no skiing or hiking really. I have a couple of question before finalizing the itinerary and the route.

1. What is a good scenic route to take - and we'd like to go in one route and come via another and plan to spend a day in Switzerland.
2. Under normal conditions, are there any stretch of the road where we'll have to cover high mountain pass through Snow (need snowchain etc ?). I understand the question #1 and #2 might be contradicting as generally a scenic route will have the risk of being under the snow, but that's why I'm not really able to to decide. I'm not originally from Europe but have driven in North American snow... but in all cases, we don't want to put up snow chains etc

Thanks, Sim.

Just to mention that it is compulsory to have either winter tyres, or (in case they are needed) snow chains at least in the car if not actually on the tyres, from December to March in Germany and several other countries in case of snow and ice - not sure what the French requirements are.

You could look at a northern route- perhaps Rhine valley, Harz mountains, Elbe valley and down through Czech Republic one way and back though Liechtenstein and central Switzerland (south of Zurich) and perhaps the French side of Lake Geneva (Annecy, Grenoble) for the otherdirection, but you options are almost endless.

Note you will need a vignette for your visit to Switzerland - making it a very expensive day as the pass is valid for 12 months - which is something like SFr40, and in Austria you need a vignette, but at least you can get a10 day version for about €5 or 6.

Have a look at viamichelin.com. The roads with a green line along it are scenic. The site also gives you the time it'll take, the costs of fuel and the toll, if applicable.
