Updated info needed on Colca Valley tour options and prices

Hi there!

I am currently in Lima and am hoping to visit Arequipa and the Colca Valley during October's long weekend. Looking at past postings on the forum and looking up the information provided in my Frommer's Guide, I am finding that a lot of it is out of date. In addition, most the tour companies' websites do not include prices.

Because most tours offered are very similar, I am hoping that some of you can put me up to date on current tour options (i.e. recommended companies), including prices, itinerary, feedback, etc.

I would love to stay away from the typical tourist routes and opt for something a little off the beaten path; something more culturally accurate. Basic accomodations are also very acceptable.

Unfortunately, time only allows me to complete a 2days/1night tour...

Thanks for your feedback!

Most companies charge between 110 to 200 soles (2 nights, 3 days). Walk up and down Jerusalen and you'll find the better ones. The cheapest I found was 120 with Andina. You stay at the same places that other companies go to.

With 2 days, you will probably be rushing and going into the canyon, trek across to the Oasis, and then up the next morning. Its a 'standard' route. Unfortunately, the time frame doesn't allow you to really get off the beaten path.

You don't need to book any tout at all, you can go on your own . Almost all tours go through San Juan and Sangalle (Oasis). You can go elsewhere: Llahuar for instance, or sleep in Tapay.

I agree, that would be the best way, but with limited time, it'd be easier to go with a tour. As that way you don't have to organise anything. But it can be done by yourself. And it'll probably be cheaper for you.

Agree with Willem and Trent: You can do it yourself and stay in villages that the tours bypass. But with that limited to one night, a tour is your only way to see the most.

For a 2 day visit, about 80-90 soles.

Plus the canyon tourist ticket, or whatever they call it. I heard that is about 90 soles now.

If someone were to do this trek without a guide but with a few extra days what route would you suggest?

Yes it is easy to trek without a guide. If you want to avoid the crowds go through Llahuar Fure then Tapay. 95% of the groups stay on the San Juan Oasis route.
