Beziers and the area nearby

I'm looking for somewhere to go with a friend for a mini-break in October and I've come across some cheap flights to Beziers in the south of France.

Can anyone tell me anything about this town and the surrounding area please? Are there nice beaches nearby and decent public transport links as we don't really want to hire a car? And what else is there to do in this area - I saw its pretty close to Carcasonne too.

Thanks,
Eva

Hi,

I posted my comments on Beziers a couple days ago on this thread:

I know expats in the Languedoc area who will drive farther to use the Bezier airport (rather than the Carcassonne one) because it's better.
I don't know that much about public transportation but some of the links I posted should have links on that..
If you do go, please let us know what you thought of the place, suggestions, complaints, recommentions. Thanks!

There are many things to see in Béziers and around.
In the city there is the 7 lock water stairway on the Canal du Midi (it is nice if you do not take a short canal boat trip at least go there and see how the little boats are passing the locks), then there is the Saint Nazaire cathedral (a monument that celebrates the victory over the Cathars and it has nice painted glass windows). Not far is the strange looking Oppidum d’Enserune (an antique former settlement) and not far there is the town of Séte called the Venice of Languedoc.
Enjoy!

i just went to sete (between Montpellier and Beziers) the weekend before last .

the beaches at Sete and Agde are quite nice. But I would not describe it as a public-transport friendly destination outside of summer.

but i think there is quite a lot to see nearby. Plus Carcassone, Perpignan and Montpellier (and even Toulouse) are not that far away on the faster trains
