Women's hiking pants - Patagonia / Ushuaia in summer

Hello!

I'm going to be visiting Patagonia and Ushuaia in Argentina over summer, and want to get some plus-size women's hiking pants. I know almost nothing about hiking gear, so I'm not sure if these will be weather appropriate. Ushuaia will apparently be a max of around 15 degrees celsius, dropping down to a minimum of around zero degrees celsius.

Anyone know whether something like this would be good? http://www.teamestrogen.com/prodMC_300465.html

Thanks!

Hi tessiebear83

I am starting to plan my next travel adventure and Argentina, including Ushuaia, keeps popping to the top of the list!!

For hiking pants- my best advice would be to go to an outdoors store and chat with the employees- they are often avid adventurers themselves and will be able to offer a lot of great advice. I'm not sure where you live- I am in Canada (Toronto) and Mountain Equipment Coop (MEC), Europe Bound, Patagonia etc have been my go-to stores in the past.

The pants you link to look really comfy! I think they would be great to pack to have on hand to lounge in when you are back from a hike. For hiking, I tend to prefer something with pockets, including a side/cargo pocket that closes securely....so much easier for storing some money, a map, kleenex, lens cap etc and not having to always go into your pack when you need something. Technical material is a must have- wind resistant, moisture wicking, quick drying. Depending on how cold your hikes get, how thick your pants end up being, and how long you expect to be out on average you may also consider a light long underwear. Some pants have a drawstring at the bottom cuff- I have found this useful in the past....99% of the time I leave the drawstring loose and the pant has a regular cuff. But on hikes that are especially cold/windy sometimes drawing that in snug really helps the cold from shooting up your pants!

Good luck!

Laura

Thanks for the advice! I had put off going into an outdoors store, because of the plus-size issue - I suspect most where I live won't have my size. But it is probably worthwhile going in and having a chat about materials etc, under the guise of buying something else!

Same size, same place, same summer. These pants will be great (I hope, I have them too and they were perfect for similar climate last year). Also recommend REI site which has some useful looking gear in plus sizes. International postage is outrageous there though.
