Current Situation? - Getting Myanmar/Burma Visa in Kunming?

Hi,

It seems that this is feasible but I cannot find any info within the last 12 months, so...

We are 2 British Citizens hoping to get a tourist visa for Myanmar whilst we are in Kunming. We will be flying from kunming to either Manderlay or Yangon at the end of October 2012.

Is it still possible for foreigners to get the Myanmar visa in Kunming? Is the process easy?
How long does this take?
Do we need to leave our passports at the embassy/consulate?
What is the current location of the embassy/consulate - I heard it had moved at least once in the last year or so?
Is it possible to get crisp US dollars in Kunming? if so where?

Many thanks.

The old Embassy at teh downtown Hotel is no longer available for visas to Foreigners , which is now quite some distance out of town your GH hotel will be able to direct you yes you will need to leave you passports at the embassy a visa has 3 mths validity so maybe you can get HK ot Uk or Eu where are you now? maybe you can get $'s US at the Banks or at airport? avoid trying to exchange RMB in Burma.

Thanks montyman,

We're currently in China and between now and Kunming the only other large cities we'll be passing through are Langzhou and Chengdu, so perhaps we could get some US dollars there.

We'll have 17 days between arriving in Kunming and flying to Myanmar, so plenty of time to get the visa but we need all that time to explore Yunnan so it's not ideal that we need to leave the passport, but we'll manage.

I'm aware that the new embassy is quite a way out of town but it's still the most convenient place for us to get the visa.

I assume from your response that it is still possible to get tourist visas in Kunming? I have no reason to think otherwise but want to be absolutely sure before ruling out our other option, which is to visit thailand for a few weeks before Myanmar and get the visa in Bangkok.

Thanks.

yes as I understand it check out the myanmar embassy online maybe they can give you telephone number of the one in Kumming I stayed Cloudland there is a tram goes direct to nearby Gh from soiuth bus station and railway station, also take just a passport photocopy with you as you do Dali, Lijiang and Shangri la and Tiger leaping gorge.
note also watch out for touts at the bus stations who want to take you to a GH for free, they get the Hotels to charge you what they say in Dali out of bus station turn ;left and 20 m is bus stop take bus to Old city and at city walls is friends Hostel on right and on left small side st with nice chiinese hotel, same same Lijiang leave bus terminus and cross road outside turn left and take bus up hill to big screen and old town in on right I stayed Inn on the square.
Many would go overland through rulli but I think thats out for now so fly direct to Yangon Mandalay from Kumming China eastern airlines

Hi spirited,

I was wondering what airline you fly into Myanmar and have you chosen for either Mandalay or Yangon?
What did you have to pay?

Thanks a lot!

@Spirited:
We have similar plans in that we will get into Kunming in about 2 weeks time and the plan is to enter Burma overland via Ruili. However I have heard that if you enter Burma overland, you are only allowed to visit the border areas and cannot travel freely in the country. You apparently also need a guide and special permits. Is this true?
I would also be curious to hear how easy it was for you to get the tourist visa in Kunming. Can you confirm that the embassy has moved to the location mentioned last? How long did it take you to obtain the visa?
We also tried booking flights into Mandalay but found they are extremely expensive. May I ask how much roughly you paid? We have found flights for $500 too pricy.

Thanks heaps!

a few years ago that was the way an expensive guide permit and driver and embassy visa you could c arry on after Lashio on your own into Myanmar but since the problems in the area you aren't allowed since a coiuple of years you can ask at embassy about the permit usually obtained at Rulli or Embassy.China Eastern airlines maybe through an agent is best deal.

New consulate from end of 2010 is in Guandu district, in south-east part of Kunming, across from the EmPark Grand hotel.
Takes one week for tourist visa.
Make sure you bring 3 photos with white background, and a photocopy of your passport main page, as well as flight bookings and maybe even a hotel booking with address of hotel.

It is possible to cross from Ruili into Myanmar, but has to arranged in advance, to gain permit for section from border to Lashio, and is expensive. There are some tours which run from Kunming to Mandalay.

More info at Slow Burma Travel.

Flights from Kunming to Mandalay, around US115 one way.
