Do you need a return ticket to get into Nicaragua?

Hey. I am going to Nicaragua on Oct 15 from Toronto, ON and will be staying there for 3 months. I do not have a return ticket booked because I am unsure what I will be doing after (probably continue travelling). So i was wondering if i need a return ticket to get into the country or if i can just go with my one-way and buy a 90 day visa??

No, but you do need "proof of onward travel" when you check-in for the flight. Currently this is only occasionally asked for, but if it is you will not be allowed to board without it and they may insist you buy a full priced return ticket before you can proceed. Its a pain in the butt...

Ok. So this is when i'm boarding the flight in Toronto? Also do you know what is considered proof of onward travel? Can I just buy like a bus/plane ticket to Panama (I might go there after), or does it have to be back to Canada? I really want to try to avoid buying a return right now.

Thanks for your help.

You need to check with the airline, as they are the ones that enforce the "Onward Travel" requirements. They will check this when you check in for the flights, and can deny boarding the flight unless you have proof of onward travel, which can be a flight or a bus.

I think it is luck of the draw, and it maybe depends on the airline and person at the counter. I flew into Nic via Spirit in Feb 2011 with no return and had no problem but others are not so lucky.

I would be prepared to either buy a ticket or have a " fake " onward confirmation with you, printed of the web. I had a fake confirmation with me but was not asked for it.

Happy travels

Yes, the requirement is with the airline when you check in at Toronto. What constitutes a "proof of onward travel" is vague and obviously airlines like to see a return ticket because this is easy for them to process, but its not actually the requirement. You should certainly be able to show any departure ticket from Nicaragua and many airlines accept an onward e-ticket itinerary...

If you are flying Spirit Airlines, you will need a round trip ticket. Other airlines, it depends. Call the airlines and ask them.
