2 weeks in Cuba

Hello

Myself and girlfriend going to cuba between 20 december 2012 and 3 Jan 2013. I have read lots of posts so thanks to everyone - our provional itinerary is:

havana for 3 nights to start with (obviously loads to do, so all good with that)
head to vinales for 4 nights (over xmas) - bike riding, mountains, trip to levisa or the other beach island
stay somewhere for a night between vinales and trinidad
stay in trinidad to 1 jan (including few days at ancon beach) - 5 nights
head back to havana for a couple of nights - note that we are not really city people and hence are happy to not stay too long in havana - appreciate most people love the place and i am sure we will too

we want to take our time and make it more of a holiday than a rushed rucksack travelers experience hence the time we have in vinales and trinidad

interest to hear anyones thoughts on
a) impact of xmas and new year on our travels ie buses, staying in casa's
b) whether we need to book for ancon beach or just turn up (we think book casa for 5 nights and then possibly just stay one night on the beach)
c) the ideal place to stay in between vinales and trinidad
d) any specific providers of good day trips ie mountains, bike tours

ta much

a- Big impact. Book pre-trip as much as possible.
b- If you can adjust to absence of bathroom and changing place, no chairs and few shadows (like we do) while at the beach you can enjoy the public beach area without staying in a hotel. You could also buy a day pass at a hotel out there. If deciding to stay overnight do book in advance.
c- If using public transport Cienfuegos. If renting a car you may try Playa Larga.

Safe travels from Havana.

You can make it from Vinales to Trinidad in one day unless you don't want to. IMO, 5 nights in Trinidad is waaaaay too many. Try Cienfuegos and more Havana.

A perfect stop between those cities is Havana which you need more time in, keep in mind you have Old Havana and Vedado which should count as two big cities to look through. If you want to view the forts on the other side of the bay you'll want to reserve a day for that because they are HUGE!

You do need to pre-book but try to keep your options open at the same time, it's Cuba, things don't go as planned. When I was there Havana didn't have power for 3 days and I had to change things around.

Also there are plenty of collectivos which imo are better than the bus so don't stress the bus and if plans change from bus reservations you won't be stranded.

I secondhand the chef that 5 days in Trinidad is waaaay too much. 1-2 days is plenty. A day trip to Santa Clara is a good option and Cienfuegos for 1-2 nights as an alternative.
