1OP..I guess you are thinking of doing it on your own rather than a truck tour?
I'd start by reading a good guide book (like the LP Africa guide) to see what kind of stuff you would like to see and do.
4 months is not really long for that trip but its possible for sure...as long as you don't want to take it very slowly or get far off the beaten track. The infrastructure varies from excellent (eg in SA) to good but very expensive (eg Botswana) to not very good at all (off the beaten track in Zambia for example)
Financially, depends a lot on the country. As well as what type of accommodation, what kind of food, what kind of transport etc.It is not a dirt cheap trip by any means. Also depends on how many organised activities you do....esp.safaris which can cost a hell of a lot.

2I've recently moved to Jo'burg, spent the past year and a half in Cape Town. You'll have no problem finding backpacker friendly hostels in CPT. My backpacking experience is limited but I imagine you can hook up with a few others along the way. From my chats with some of the tourists in CPT I get the impression that it's kind of their last stop (ie, they start somewhere north, like in Jo'burg, and end in Cape Town).
Cape Town has a great metro rail system for getting out of the city and seeing the nearby countryside and beaches (make sure to check out the penguins at Boulder Beach). Jo'burg relies heavily on their kombie's (taxis). You'll have to figure out the finger system though, each area of the city has a different sign that you flash from the side of the road. I still haven't figured that out haha. The drivers are typically friendly and willing to point you in the right direction to find a kombie that you need. The drivers will typically hoot their horn frequently when their looking to pick up passengers, if you're in inner-city Jo'burg just walk towards the hooting and stick a hand out.
