Volunteering in Ghana
Hi,I am very interested in volunteering in Ghana next summer. I'd prefer to work in an orphanage or in school. Does anybody have any experience with volunteering agencies in Ghana and volunteering in general? Which agency would you recommend?
I'm a little worried, though. I'm an 18-year-old woman, will probably be travelling alone, and I'm white (so I won't exactly blend in on the streets). Could that be a problem? I've been to some third-world countries before (Yemen, Namibia..), but I've always travelled with parents, so that will actually be my first time as a single traveller.
Thanks for answers!

You shouldn't have much to worry about. Check out this other thread up at the top if you have not yet, http://www.lonelyplanet.com/thorntree/thread.jspa?threadID=2251185 about women traveling in Ghana. Just take a few precautions and you will be fine. You will probably meet other volunteers and people you can travel with also.

I am going to Ghana to volunteer with Original Volunteers on Thursday for 2 weeks. I can let you know how I get on if you'd like, and how it was going with this company.
