We did a week in Bali last July(Ubud) and returned for 3 weeks this June. We enjoyed staying in Munduk in the mountains where there are several waterfall hikes to do. If you are more ambitious you can hire a guide to take you on several other hikes in the area. We are also snorkelers and spent some time in Pemuteran in the north and Amed in the east, both of which are nice areas to explore on foot and are a bit off the beaten path. Ubud is a great place to get out and walk through the rice fields - plenty of temples to see as well. Sideman is another great area for walks but we did not stay there. Send me a PM if you would like recommendations for places to stay.

Thank you. I'll add Munduk to our list of places to check out. Sideman was already on my list...along with Tegallalang, Jatiluwih and the numerous trails within Ubud. As for accomodations, we have a list of numerous places to check out: Tegal Sari, Alan Shanti, Ubud Sari, Okawati, etc., etc. It'll be fun and interesting to check them out when we get there. Thank you for you suggestions!

I've added both places to the list. They seem to have gotten rave reviews on TripAdvisor. Thanks again! A few weeks and we'll be off to Bali for 3 weeks of enjoying the environment, the people, the culture and whatever! Namaste!

Ubud is fantastic. I loved it there, but like everywhere else in the world, it may all be changed. I was last there15 years ago. Bali was beautiful, but Kuta is best to just shop for a day and then leave, it's just overrun with tourists and mainly, young people from Australia stopping over to drink for a few days. Okay, not all of them, but it really is packed out. A great thing to do is rent a motorcycle and go around the island yourself, it's fantastic. You can see my travel writing on Bali and Yoga at my blog Women Travelling Alone blogspot. Hope that helps a bit.

Thanks, Marylynne. After talking with my neighbor who was there 20 years ago and listening to his description of what it was like, makes me want to kick myself for neglecting this place. I had always heard about Bali since my high school years, but, living here in Hawai'i, i didn't think of it as being different. I was certainly wrong!!! I could've been there 55 years ago. But, of course, traveling that distance with a prop-driven aircraft would've taken me days to get there.....

I have beent o Bali 5 times between 1970-2005. If there are two of you and it is not holiday time in Australia (they got a lot of tourism from there) I wold recommend picking a town rather than a hotel. One person sits in a cafe and the other one roams around and finds a hotel. Lots of hotels in Bali.

Thank you for your advice. Chilling out and simply enjoying the culture is really all that i am seeking. Those days of running amok trying to cover everything and anything...is in the past. Munduk is definitely on the list for a couple of days or more. I'm also considering Sidemen. As for beaches...i'm surrounded by them here in Hawai'i but i might just take a look-see at Kuta to compare it with Waikiki.

You'll be very disappointed. Consider also hiring a car and driver for a day or two see a little more of the island. I thoroughly recommend Putu Arnawa.

Thanks, groo. I did check out Kuta on YouTube and know what to expect. As for the recommendation that i hire a car and driver for day-long excursions, i think it's a good idea. I've had friends recommend certain drivers and i'll certainly look into Putu Arnawa. He, in particular, seems to have quite a following on the internet...

In Ubud itself I recommend Nick's Guesthouse. It's beautiful and well run; a cut above most accommodations in Ubud.
