We need advise on the best itinerary on a trip to Ecuador & GalapagosHi,
We (a couple) will start a 4 weeks trip to Ecuador next week and we have doubts on which would be the best route to follow. We only have the return flight from Europe to Ecuador (Quito) and we are interested mainly is doing trekkings, visiting Amazonas and Galapagos.
We were thinking in doing something similar to:
- 2 days Quito
- 3 days Mindo zone
- 3 days Cotopaxi zone
- 2 days Quilatoa zone
- 1 day Banos
- 2 days Cuenca
- 1 day Guayaquil
- 6 days Galapagos
- 3 days Amazonas (rio Napo)
- 2 days Otavalo
- 1 day Quito
Do you think it's a feasible itinerary? Would you recommend us to spend more days in one of the above zones? Less days? Include or exclude something?
As you can see, we are a bit lost and we would appreciate any advice on the itinerary and any general advice or tip for the trip to Ecuador and Galapagos.
Is it safe to travel in Ecuador? What about the cities like Quito, Cuenca or Guayaquil?
Thanks in advanced!

4First, I would recommend going to the Amazon before the Galapagos. It's incredible, but after how fearless animals are in the Galapagos, it could seem disappointing relatively speaking. Also, flights to the Amazon are from Quito, so I would plan the Amazon around Quito. As zararock said, I would also consider a 5 day / 4 night program in the Amazon. Day 1 is spent traveling to your lodge and most of the last day is spent traveling back to Quito. So 3 days is really 1 1/3 days in the jungle.
Second, please consider that in Galapagos, day of arrival only gives you 1/2 day of activities whereas day of departure is basically just departure. So you are giving yourself 4.5 days in Galapagos, not 6. It's impossible to have enough time in Galapagos, I think. You could take your 1 day in Guayaquil on the way to Galapagos.
I think 2 days / 1 night in Mindo would give you a taste of that, so if I were trying to find a day to put elsewhere, I'd start with that. Same with Cotopaxi unless you plan to do several different activities.
It's good you have Otavalo at the end because you won't have to lug around everything you buy for your entire trip.
You need to allow yourself the time it takes to travel between your different destinations, too. Distances by bus can take a very long time in Ecuador. Flights are not that expensive.
