acceptability of foreign chip ATM cards

Hello,
my question is whether chip embedded foreign ATM/debit cards are acceptable in Kerala and Goa in particular. I'm asking because the Wikitravel Kerala site states that chip embedded cards are not accepted. The India LP is not specific on the subject. The search forum has nothing more recent than about a year ago although it shows a wide divergence of opinion on the reliability of Indian ATMs.
I'd appreciate any recent advice as to whether chip embedded cards are OK in Kerala and Goa.

Well mine work in every ATM that accepts international cards everywhere in India.

The thing is, are your cards integrated with the international system? Check with your card provider and tell them where you are travelling to. Many card providers have security systems where the card doesn't work if it suddenly turns up in Kuala Lumper or where ever.

And let the bank know before you leave that you`ll be using it abroad and for how long.

I have had no problems with my chip embedded cards in India. I do however think that Indian ATM machines don't read the chip but get its info from the magnetic strip.

You do have such a strip as well, don't you?

I think the difference between the strip and the chip is one of safety, that the magnetic strip can be skimmed and the chip not. But the functionality is otherwise much the same.

I use chip cards in India - as was just said - a lot of people just swipe them as they don't have chip terminals ... some places have chip terminals ... some don't The ATM's will take chip debit cards ... when they work. Anyway, you'll be able to use your cards in the 'south'.

If you experience problems with ATMs, then try HDFC bank. Only there did my cards work. Maximum amount per transaction was 10000 rupies, and an extra charge of 200 rupies.
If you want to change money, look for U.A.E. Exchange.
