San Sebastian to Barcelona

My husband and I are planning a 2 week trip to Spain next year. We have a bit of flexibility in the dates (generally June-August). We are thinking of an apartment in each city, but wonder if a week in Barcelona is too long? If we rent a car and drive from San Sebastian to Barcelona where are interesting places to stay along the way? While in San Sebastian we will be making several day trips to Bilbao. Is this advisable? We prefer to have an apartment and put down roots rather than frequently changing hotels.

sorry I couldnt resist this but it takes a lot longer then 2 weeks to even think about putting down roots ;) 2weeks is a relatively short holiday.

You are correct on both points. Pity, but we are unable to be away longer than that.

It is the general opinion on this forum that having a car is a pain in the cities, but a pleasure to see the countryside. So renting a car to drive from San Sebastian to Barcelona with some stops on the way makes sense, but drop the car once you are in Barcelona. Different day-trips to Bilbao do not make sense. In that case you better stay in Bilbao and make a daytrip to San Sebastian. As far as the Guggenhim in Bilbao is concerned when I visited it, many years ago, I found the outside more interesting than the inside, too many of the same things.

Hi Karenkr!

Welcome to TT!

but wonder if a week in Barcelona is too long? If we rent a car and drive from San Sebastian to Barcelona where are interesting places to stay along the way?

The answer to both questions is similar. It depends on your likes, interests, preferences, on what do you want to make/visit during your trip, what type of places do you prefer...

While in San Sebastian we will be making several day trips to Bilbao. Is this advisable?

Once again, it depends. If you are going to spend more time in Bilbao than in San Sebastián, it would make sense to be based in Bilbao. The time you'll need to visit Bilbao will depend, once again, on your interests, on what do you want to make/visit there.
