Rome/Florence passes

Does anyone have an opinion on whether one should purchase a pass for the museums in each of these cities? Should we just buy tickets separately for each museum? In Florence it appears we get entrance to many, but I believe we will only want to do about 6 of them at the most-does the pass really cut down on hassles is my question I guess. As for Rome?

Unless you intend slogging round lots of them it's probably not worthwhile. However, unless you can be on the doorstep at (or more likely half an hour before) opening time, it might be worth pre-booking tickets in particular for the Vatican and also the Uffizi so you can select your time

Florence pass is worthwhile as it lets you jumo the queue at most of the museums or certainly did do last year. As for Rome i have only ever seen bad queues at the vatican, although lots of friends have mentioned the colleseum has been bad this year

In Rome you can get a ticket that gives you entrance to the Palatine and the Colosseum. Now if you queue for the ticket at the Colosseum the queue is miles long, however at the Palatine it is much much shorter, for exactly the same ticket.

In my opinion, the Florence Pass is worth it but the Rome Pass is not. Visiting Accademia, Uffizi and Palazzo Vecchio would cost you 46 euro if you purchased individual tickets. The Florence pass costs 50 euro and includes about 8 attractions. If you were to only visit the 3 spots I listed you'd wind up wasting 4 euro but you'd also save quite a bit of time as the pass is essentially a "reservation" to skip the line (without having to actually go through the steps of booking the reservation yourself). The saved time is worth much more than 4 euro as the lines at Accademia and Uffizi can get ridiculously long.

The museums/galleries included on the Rome pass aren't as attractive to what is available on the Florence pass; so for that reason it's not worth it. Keep in mind that the Vatican is not included in the Rome pass. Tickets for the Vatican cost 14 euro without a reservation and 19 euro with a reservation (and you'll want a reservation).
