Insurance that starts at destination
Hi all,I am organising the Manaslu Trail Race and some other running events in Nepal. I would love to have any suggestions from traveller who've been happy with their insurance cover. I am wading through fine print, but tried and tested suggestions would be very welcome.
Requirement is the following.
- Cover for travel to 5,135 m
- Cover for helicopter evacuation
- Cover for repatriation to your country for emergency treatment
- Cover for a "race" or sports competition - some exclude this in their fine print
Recommendations for different nationalities, namely India, Australia, NZian
Cover for trips starting at their destination (already away)
Many thanks to responders.

I join the american alpine club and your membership gives you a $5k rescue benefit (helicopter evacuation) with no altitude limit. If you want more insurance, you can purchase additional through Global Rescue. You can join from almost any Country in the world. This policy does not cover for repatriation to your country for emergency treatment. I have not read the fine print on whether is covers a "race" or "sports competition" but I tend to think that it will. However, this also is not medical insurance. If you are looking just for an expensive rescue (helicopter evacuation insurance) you can't beat its price. Regular membership is $75 USD for those between ages 29 and 65. Of course, if you need to be helicoptered rescued from the Manaslu area, the rescue is likely to cost $ 5 to 10k, but the odds that you will actually use it are probably low.I know roger ray and he is planning to trek the Manaslu Circuit close to the time of your race. Please let roger know the exact dates of the race so he can plan accordingly. I'm sure he doesn't want to be trekking while your race is happening.
Further, it would be very helpful to all trekkers if you can post your race dates and the race location on this Nepal board as soon as you know the dates. Many trekkers really don't want to plan their trek on a race date. I think you'd be doing us all a big favor and you'll reduce potential conflicts with lodging, food, and trail space if you can give us a "heads up" on your events. Thank you for your consideration of this idea.
This fall I am trekking Kanchenjunga. Since this is a camping trek and it is more expensive than my tea house treks, I purchased a comprehensive travel insurance policy that includes cancellation insurance. I selected a travel guard basic policy The cost is dependent on your travel costs, your age, where you are traveling, and how long. This policy gives you $500,000 for emergency medical evacuation and repatriation of remains. It also has a $30,000k medical benefit. You can purchase more, depending on the policy. Thanks Tom,Roger, the race itinerary is here: http://manaslutrailrace.org/itinerary/#.UFRXMKQe6Gs We're going to carry some tents just in case and I will sleep in the cow shed when necessary. We'll be a big group, but don't want to spoil other people's enjoyment.
