Currency exchanges in Vietnam

Maybe a long shot this, but is it possible to exchange Thai Baht to Dong easily in Vietnam? Only asking as I live in Thailand and would need to make 2 exchanges otherwise; THB - USD - VND.

Also a long shot, does anyone know if Thai ATM cards would work in Vietnam or do I need to bring a big wad of cash? (not preferable).

Any advice on carrying large amounts of cash? Read a few reports of money going missing from hotel rooms so the only alternative is to keep it on us - which is not really the best of plans.

Any tips?

Ok, but is it safe to walk round with thousands of dollars in cash on your person?

Is there an alternative?
