Rental Car - Pick up / Drop off in Different Cities

Help! It costs a fortune to pick up a car in one city, Seattle, and drop it off in Portland.

Anyone have any suggestions on companies to use or other ideas??
Much appreciated!

My understanding is it's not so much different cities, as different states. Some years back we picked up in LA, and dropped off in Bakersfield and didn't get slugged with a one way fee, but when I looked at talking the car on the Vegas, the price shot up.
Maybe check out dropping off the car just across the river in Vancouver WA if this is not too inconvenient, and see if this bring the price down?

Try Priceline name your own price. The price they accept is what you pay and the company that accepts you offer may need to move a car from Seattle to Portland.

Or you could just make the three hour drive back to Seattle to return the car.

With very few exceptions, one-way drop off fees are expensive. The exceptions are based on whether you happen to be traveling in a location where one-way drop-offs are common and occur uniformly, such as Florida. Otherwise, rental car companies are stuck needing re-distribute the cars back to different locations. That costs money.

Planning circular trips with a rental car is the way to go. Or take Amtrak between Seattle and Portland, renting a car in each city to tour different areas (if that's your agenda). There are likely buses between the cities as well.
