a few questions about upcoming trip
We will be in Iceland sept 25 to oct 2. We have a car rented and will be traveling ad lib with no definite route or reservations...a few questions.1)) what is the cost of gas?
2) can we rent a cell phone .. where and how much? we have a verizon cell phone but not activated so i dont know if we can get a sim card in iceland and purchase minutes.
3) will we find accomodations open in the less traveled part of the country. we will be limited as to what roads we can travel on due to the car rental policies so we wont be getting off the beaten path.
4) does anyone have a recommendation for us for a blue lagoon experience without the tourist effect and if so, where?
I appreciate your comments and as we get closer i 'm sure we will come up with more questions. thanks in advance

Yes. But it is advisable to phone a day or so ahead, as otherwise you might turn up and find nobody there to greet you or have any food ready for you.does anyone have a recommendation for us for a blue lagoon experience without the tourist effect and if so, where
Depends what you mean. There is a smaller/nicer/cheaper blue lagoon type place at Myvatn, and with a great view. Then there are lots of very warm town/village outdoor swimming pools nearly all with hot tubs, one in most villages in the country, and very much cheaper than the aforementioned. There are also some natural warm waters here and there, but very few are right next to a main road or so easy to find.

We've just spent a month in Iceland, packed with the most incredible experiences. It's an amazing destination to explore so having a rental car and a nose for exploring will serve you well. There are no end of treasures to uncover and for a smallish country it takes some exploring.We found it much cheaper than we expected for gas and food shopping, fuel was generally much cheaper than UK and Western Europe and supermarkets comparable but we were camping not in hotels so don't know how prices are for that.
We took an unlocked phone and bought a local Vodafone SIM. Very easy to do and made calls cheap and easy. Vodafone shops in Reykjavik and many garages sell starter packs too. English is widely spoken so really easy to sort these things out.
You will need to call ahead about accommodation. Lots of places close out of season and the season ends at the end of August for some.
You may also need to check road conditions as not all roads are open all year and closures can happen as season ends and depending on weather and snows.
The Blue Lagoon is great but expensive for what it is. The Natural Baths at Myvatn are a good cheaper alternative but you will find free or very cheap hot pools, natural and man-made, all around Iceland. Verizon phones do not usually have the option of replacing the SIM card. Not to mention it probably doesn't run on the European GSM frequencies, you'll have to check in all those cases. The SIM card should be self explanatory, the GSM freq would be listed on the product page of the website or the box/instructions.
