Car rental in Algeria

Can you just rent a car and drive around in the north of the country (possibly doing the Algiers - Bou Sada - El Oued - Ghardaia - Algiers loop)? If yes, are there local car rentals you would recommend?

You can rent a car in Algeria, but driving as far south as Ghardaia might not be possible, depends on their ever changing security ideas.

There's one area in the north to be careful; Tizi Ouzou region where even my Algerian colleagues were concerned about ambushes along the road (there's one famous piece of road that's enshrouded by trees apparently).

Blida area can also have a few problems

Otherwise Algeria is very laid back & outside the cities, the driving is generally not bad.

Fairly sure I saw car hire companies (the major international ones) at the airport.

Thanks for the reply. Is the loop I suggested even doable, since you mention security issues along the road?

You can rent a car at the international airport. Algiers - Bou Saada is not recommended for foreigners, nor the Bou Saada to Ghardaia. Both are small country roads. You might face difficulty with police road blocks. It is better to go Algiers-Constantine-Ghardaia loop because the Algiers-Constantine and Ghardaia-Algiers stretch are major highways with no problems. Constantine-Ghardaia via Biskra and Ouargla is a lesser travelled road but should be ok.
