12 hour sightseeing in Kuala Lumpur in the middle of the night

Hi all,

We will be coming home via KL on Thursday 24 Jan. Our plane from Hanoi arrives at 9:40pm, then the onward flight leaves at 10:15am the next morning. It would just be a waste to book a hotel for the night, only to leave straight after. We'd much prefer to wander the city and night seeing as much as possible. We'll catch the KLIA Ekspres train in after customs, then straight back out in the morning. Is it true that you can check in for your flight 3 hours prior to departure at the KL Sentral Station?

Any recommendations on what to do overnight? I've found some night markets like Jalan Alor, and many reviewers say they are lively practically all night. Is this true? Is there anything that's open, or is it just a matter of wandering around and looking at things? Also, what of public transport; is the metro/monorail operating at these times?

Finally, is it safe for a family of three (no kids) to wander the streets on a Thursday night? Thanks in advance! :)

Not all airlines have check ins at KL Sentral so that would depend on what airline you;re using.

JamesAdams7,

1. Mas has a check in counter in KL Sentral. 3 hrs should be enough. See the link here :http://www.malaysiaairlines.com/hq/en/book-and-plan/check-in/counter.html

2. The trains operates till 11+ at night. If you're going to Jalan Alor, you should be taking the monorails.
Is it safe? It should be, because the Bukit Bintang street you plan to go is normally full of people walking and wondering around, even during wee hours.

If it was me, I wouldn't wonder too much around. KL is fairly safe, not the safest.

Although so, it is true. the night life in KL is quite all right, Bukit Bintang, Jalan Alor, Petaling Streets, they are all open till at least 1/2 am.
I myself have never been out after that, so I cannot comment if they are still open at 3/4

Have a great trip!

Thanks very much guys! Very helpful, and we'll check those places out. Might just wander a little bit at the markets at ~12am then find a hotel in Chinatown. Thanks for the tips.
