East coast to west coast itinerary help!

In 300 miles, or 4.5 hours, from Chicago, I can drive to Detroit, Traverse City, St Louis, Cleveland, Columbus, Louisville, Lexington, Minneapolis, Door County, Des Moines, If I leave at 7am, I am there by lunch time.But (a) why does anyone need to do such stunts, and (b) the local driving like mad is not the same experience as a tourist, or even a USA person, driving new roads for the first time, and wanting to see stuff and stop a bit. I still think my 250km/150mi average is more than plenty for the cool and wise traveller!
