California in March with toddler

Hey everyone.

I am narrowing down my options for a 2-week vacation with my 2.5 year old in March-April. We are flying from Québec, Canada and I was thinking about going to San Fransisco and then renting an RV.

I will have my hubby with me a few days and a friend for another few days then be going solo with the kiddo for a few days.

What will the weather be like in March/April?
What are some realistic destinations for us? (parks and beaches are a must!)
What are some fun toddler activities in the area?
Can anyone suggest an itinerary that would not involved moving around too much (4-5 campsites) but that would allow us to see a little bit of everything.

I have never traveled to the US before but have done plenty of backpacking in my life and we're all experienced campers.

I really appreciate the help!!

This is quite a change from your prior post wanting warm beaches and cheap beach huts.

March/April will be cool and rainy. Beaches rainy and water frigid.

RV will cost substantially more than your $2K for flights and everything will allow.

March and April in San Francisco will probably be foggy and rainy. Warmer beaches will be found in San Diego, not San Francisco and Monterey. It would be best to plan to travel by car, not an RV, and stay in warm and dry motels, such as Motel 6, Quality Inns, and similar along your route. Highway #1 along the California coastline is very scenic.

There is a boardwalk in Santa Cruz, the aquarium in Monterey, Año Nuevo elephant seals, redwoods, Pismo Beach sand dunes, Solvang, wineries, Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo, Carpinteria, Venice, Anaheim, Laguna, San Diego Mission Bay.

It's the wrong time of year for the type of trip you envision in California. Consider going to Florida instead. Rent a car and stay in inexpensive motels. Some campsites will have cabin rentals. You could also bring a tent. Here's a site with info about state parks in FL: http://www.floridastateparks.org/

Please forget the camper idea. If you want to camp, visit a Sears or similar store and buy camping gear when you get here. It will be much less than renting an RV, even if you donate the gear to a charity when you leave.

When people say it will be "rainy" in California, they mean that it's the time of year when it can rain, as opposed to the summer when it won't rain. Over the course of the two months of March and April, SF has an average of 17 rainy days. LA and San Diego have an average of 11 in two months.

But if you want a vacation that involves camping outdoors by a warm sunny beach that time of year in California is not where to find it. High temperatures along the coast average in the upper 50s around SF, mid 60s in SoCal. If you want warmth and sun, head inland to the deserts: Palm Springs will probably be around 80. In Death Valley, Furnace Creek will be in the upper 80s.
