So, ignoring the obvious ridiculous nature of your question, exactly how do you plan to enter the country?

Syria is in the grips of a civil war (now including Iranian troops) and you plan to just walk in? I'm really curious how you obtained your entry visa; since you need one, can't get one at the border, can only get one from the Syrian embassy in Washington, D.C. And they aren't issuing them.

You might need to rethink your plan.

BTW - where is "the city of Petra"? I've heard of Petra, been there in fact, but it's not a city so you may be thinking of somewhere else.

Yes, is totally safe. I've heard the government loves Americans and would recommend wearing something with a US flag on it when you cross the border. That and a big smile will almost surely guarantee a warm and hospitable welcome!

And don't forget to tell them you're planning to visit Israel as well, since it's so close. It would be a pity to waste the opportunity.

Sorry, I must not have been paying as good attention as I should have. Are there Iranian troops actually involved in combat against the rebels? Are they elements of the Revolutionary Guard? I'm just wondering how far Iran will go to support Assad's government.

Yes, there are Iranian troops on the ground in Syria supporting the Assad government. I do know if they are the RG.

I'm not making a political statement, only offering evidence of the unsafe conditions in the country. The presence of Iranian troops is easily verifiable by a quick Google search. The UN has confirmed their presence.

It's of course stupid to think about going to Syria now, but #2, no evidence of "Iranian troops"!

And I don't think normal Syrians (or Iranians for that matter) are hostile to Americans. But now is clearly not the time to go..

Ok, I'm not there, so I can't say for sure, but haven't heard about anything myself. At least not troops like in regular Iranian soldiers. But there was some rumors about intelligence people being in Syria. English is not my main language, so I don't know if my definition of "troops" is right:) anyway, stay far away from Syria. I want to go some day when it gets more peaceful, but it could take years..

I spent several weeks traveling throughout much of Syria last year prior to any of their current troubles. I've been to a whole lot of countries, but none where the people are as warm, friendly and inviting. I'm more optimistic than gululv as I believe the country will rebound relatively quickly once the current regime and their allies are gone.

Syria is a wonderful country.

Safe travels.

Hard to say really, how long it will last. The alarming thing is that foreign states and groups have strong interests in the conflict, on both sides. Hope it will not turn into a "new Lebanon" or "new Iraq". Have heard great things about the country.
