Li River valley - Xingping

Looking at where to stay for a couple of days in the Li River valley - what I can see seems to suggest it might be better to be in Xingping, even if you have to go through Yangshuo to get there. Anyone done that? Know if that is a good idea? Any suggestions of places to stay there? The Rough Guide map locates Our Inn there but their description puts it in Dahebei village.

Li River Valley? Not sure what you are referring to here. You mean the area of the Li River between Yangshuo and Guilin? Or do you mean the Yu Long Valley?

Xing Ping is a smallish village, bustling with tourists, day trippers and shops during the day... but still quiet and quaint during the mornings and evenings. There are a few places to stay, This Old Place would by my pick.

In the area surrounding Yangshuo, there are lots of villages and options for accommodation that is not in bustling Yangshuo. Some are along the Li River, some along the Yu Long (Dragon) River and some not along either, but in nice villages.

Be very cautious of all travel guides for China, as they get out of date very quickly and don't always offer up the best options... sometimes they are just plain wrong too. Especially in this area!

What exactly are you looking at doing?

I know one hotel inn called "Xin Ping 758 Hotel Yangshuo " which is located in Xinping Town, Yangshuo. You may google it. Last time when we went there, we stayed there. It is small, but comfortable. Xinping is a small and quiet town aside Li River, valueable to visit.

Xingping's quite a nice place, though the presence of a lot of tourists - and particularly Chinese tourist groups - means there is some irritating hassle from the locals. It is, however, still a great base to explore the scenery of this region. I stayed at This Old Place, and it seemed to have the bulk of the tourist trade in town. It's a nice Youth Hostel, with dorms and decent private rooms, and you can find them on at least one of the hostel booking websites (under Yangshuo). For the best walks in the area, take a boat across the river and start walking. Very few tourists out there, and the scenery is gorgeous.

Dahebei Village is just 2 minutes crossing the Li River by public ferry boat ( 2 RMB per person). Dahebei is a penisula by the Li River and surrounding by amazing karst mountains. This village is a very quiet heaven with beautiful landscape and real Southen Chinese daily life without disturbed by tourism. There are a few guesthouses/hostels you can choose, Xingping Our Inn is the best one I can recommend. Because they have nice big clean rooms, fantastic garden facing to the mountains and the river. Many communal area you can sit to read a book or relax yourself. The staff are very nice and helpful, some can speak very good English.
