Holiday suggestions for Hawaii
My son (in his late 20s) and his girlfriend are considering a 2 week holiday in Hawaii late December (after Christmas) early January. We are from Australia. He is an experienced surfer and she likes the beach (but not a surfer). They are looking for a small town or community with a few places to stay (mid range), local restaurants, bars etc. with a beach close by and a few surfing spots in the area. They would be happy to hire a car. Not really interested in resorts. For those of you who know Puerto Escondido he went there a couple of years ago and loved it so looking for something similar but bit closer to Australia.
Any of the larger islands would be OK but probably not the north shore of Oahu (I gather it is very crowded at this time of the year and has a bad reputation for “localism” on the surf breaks).
Any suggestions for websites on surfing in Hawaii?

Maui or Kauai would be the alternatives if they don't want to surf in Oahu. The Big Island of Hawaii doesn't as much in the way of surfing. However, the best winter surf doesn't always go hand in hand with the best weather that time of year.Waikiki on Oahu is a good surfing beach with many breaks, despite the hotels and city it fronts.
They will need to rent a car on an island other than Oahu.
They are really going to have to get going on making reservations. Rental cars will sell out and the best accomodations are filling up.
They might want to start looking at the posts on TripAdvisor.com where more locals post.

Maui-Paia (Laird Hamilton lives there)http://www.paiamaui.com/
If flying into Honolulu a few nights on the north shore of Oahu there is a must for a surfer, cool area to boot...consider a VRBO near the surf beaches.
The two issues for Hawaii is a car is needed to see most of it, not cheap in high season, and also the main surf breaks have a local surfer decorum that if not adhered to will result in a fight with the locals, and can be violent, so you are now warned. Local car break ins too are very common.
