Brisbane to Taiwan-end December 2012

Looking at going to Taiwan after Christmas.
A little shocked to find out that the airfare is so expensive. Not just because of the festive season, but compared to other countries with 7-8 hours flight, the fee to Taiwan is more than $1700. Any thoughts?
And how/where to find cheaper fare? Not quite interested in too many stops.
Thanks in advance.

Air Asia also flies to Taipei from KL. Can be as low as around US$140 one-way.

Or try Malaysia Airlines to Kuala Lumpur, and then Air Asia to Taipei.

More alternatives:

You can fly from Gold Coast to Taiwan changing planes in Singapore with Scoot.

Alternatively, you can fly from Gold Coast to Singapore with Scoot and from Singapore to Taiwan with Jetstar or Tiger Airways.

Thanks everyone for your input.
Having one stop with different airline cant be quite scarry, our experience with China Southern and AirAsia. The custom and immigration clearance can take a long time.
However, thanks to your sharing, I am reminded of Jetstar and had a look, we can go to Taiwan via Japan! The transit for that particular day that I look at is 30 hrs, but hope to find better timing.
Cheers,

That's true about connections. My last flight with Air Asia was changed from 10am to 8am. They sent me an email alert at 1am. Had to then change my wake up time to 4.30am and just managed to change my taxi pick up as well.

Try Cathay pacific for a connection in Hong Kong. HKG-TPE is the world's busiest intl route, so plenty of connections to/from.
