Oktoberfest onto ???

Hi my friend and I are planning to stay in Munich October 3rd to 5th 2012. We then have until the 15th of October to do some travelling around Europe. We are wondering would it be a bit crazy to think we could fit in Salzburg,Ljubjana,Zagreb,Hvar,Split,Dubrovnik and then onto Budapest .
Does anyone know if the coastal areas of Croatia would still be busy and easily acessible.
Has anyone got any other route suggestions or ittineries?
Thanks for your help :)

Assuming you have accommodation already booked for Oktoberfest...? Cos if not, this is an immediate problem finding anything left...

Munich to Salzburg = 1.5 hrs via train
Salzburg to Ljubljana = 4.5 hrs with one change via train
Ljubljana to Zagreb = 2:20, some of them direct via train
Zagreb to Hvar = 5hrs or so by bus
Hvar to Split = 1.5 to 2 hrs depending on the boat you use to cross
Split to Dubrovnik = 5 hrs or so by bus
Dubrovnik to Budapest = 6 hrs via bus to Sarajevo followed by 11 hrs on the train to Budapest.

So yes, it's entirely, possible, but you only have 9 days to travel through 7 destinations, because you lose an entire day travelling between Dubrovnik and Budapest (there are no flights available). Let me break it down for you to clarify.

The question is why you would want to do this.

You have 10 days, which is 240 hrs.
You intend to cover off 7 destinations.

Subtract 8 hrs per day for sleeping
Subtract 2 hrs per day for cooking and eating
Subtract 1.5 hrs per day for personal hygiene (using the toilet, brushing teeth, getting dressed, slowly having your first coffee of the day, having a shower etc)
Subtract 1.5 hrs per day for stopping for coffees, asking for directions, or figuring out what to do next.
Subtract 0.5 hrs per day for emailing/calling home.
I assume you drink alcohol, otherwise there's no point going to Munich during Oktoberfest, so subtract an average of 1 hr per day for drinking, and another 1 hr per day for hangover recovery, on a pro rata basis.

Subtract 0.75 hrs per destination for getting from the train/bus stop to your accommodation, and checking in.
Subtract 0.75 hrs per destination for checking out and getting back to the train/bus stop for the next leg.
Subtract 0.5 hrs per destination for orientating yourself in your new environment.
Subtract 0.5 hrs per destination for getting lost.

Total hrs lost per day therefore = 15.5 out of every 24.
Total hrs lost per destination = 2.5. Not a lot at first glance, but there are 7 of them...

Total travel duration = 37 hrs.

So.

240 total hrs
minus
15.5 hrs x 10 days
minus
2.5 hrs x 7 destinations
minus
37 hrs travel duration

equals

240 - 155 - 17.5 - 37 = 30.5 hrs left for sightseeing stuff.

30.5 hrs divided by 7 destinations = 4 hrs 20 minutes per destination.

Maybe it's cos I'm getting on a bit and hitting my mid 30's, but to be honest, I'd want to spend more than 4 hrs 20 minutes sight seeing in any of those destinations.

PS - I didn't allow for any downtime due to transport delays or waiting for connections.

re #1

You should write it all up as an app.

I once programmed a spread-sheet along these lines ..

It can also be run real-time so that, for example, if you get to your hotel early one day you can plan in an extra 10 minutes' sightseeing.

.... and if you're running late due to a late arrival of a train, you can claw back time by using a taxi instead of taking the time to figure out the local tram/bus system.

I have to agree with the others, don't stuff to many cities or things to do in one trip. Rather decide on 2-3 and do them properly. I've travelled a lot and you don't wanna be on the run all of the time you wanna see, explore and experience the new cities and culture.
