11 Days - Mompos, La Guajira, TayronaHello,
I will be traveling to Colombia in October and am trying to work out a loose itinerary. I will be flying in and out of Cartagena. I have been to Colombia for several months before and while beautiful Caratagena was one of my least favorite places, so I don't have much desire to hangout there other than the night before I fly out. I am hoping to make it to some places I missed last time but would really like to visit. Mompos is top of my list, I loved Colombian colonial towns like Popayan and the villages outside San Gil so I think Id really enjoy Mompos. Im also hoping to visit La Guajira (Cabo de la Vela and possibly Punta Gallinas) and Tayrona. I just think its going to be tough to squeeze all of this in. If I opt for Punta Gallinas I think I will prob miss out on Tayrona, but my question is do others think it feasible to visit Mompos, Cabo De La Vela, and Tayrona? If not which would you skip? At the moment Im thinking if I miss one it would be Tayrona as it looks beautiful but does not seem as unique as La Guajira. If I could spend a day/night in Tayrona though that would be great too. Any tips, suggestions, etc. appreciated.

1Just got back from two weeks in Colombia. We did the first 3 nights in Bogota, a night in Cartagena, a night in Tolu, 2 nights on Isla Mucura, a night in Tolu, 3 nights in Mompox, 2 nights in Rincon del Mar, and finished up with a night each in Cartagena and Bogota. We had toyed with the idea of going to Santa Marta and Tayrona but no one we talked to really loved it and we don't feel we missed anything. I would love to have gone to La Guajira but it is quite a bit of a trek from Mompox.
All 4 of us loved Mompox. I'd say do 3 nights there, not 2. It does take all day to get there, so you might as well make the most of your travel days by spending time there. There is a direct bus service running from Cartagena either daily or alternating days for $50,000 COP per person. It's expensive but the easiest way, I think it took the people we met about 8 hours. We did it the hard way with our trips to the beaches south of Cartagena, saved a few thousand pesos each but had taxi-chalupa-bus-bus-moto instead of one bus.
Will be posting some brief travel notes shortly on our trip, check the forum.

I highly recommend Mompox and La Guajira Peninsula and Punta Gallinas!
