money abroad

Hey!

This is really late notice i know, basically I applied for a bank account that allowed free withdrawals abroad but due to not having a fixed address where i was registered on the electoral role it got decline.

We leave to america on saturday morning starting a 9 month tour round the world covering usa, south america, oz, nz, sea.

I'm wondering if anyone knows of a way we can get access to money (maybe via one of the pre paid cards) without paying extortinate fees. Its too late for us to apply for a bank card and am looking into one the pre paid cards that have low or nil withdrawal fees?

Just looking for suggestions, worst comes to worst I'll have to withdraw using my barclays debit card but just thought i'd check :)

No prepaid card will give you totally free access to your money at a good rate but I'm guessing know that already.

Better just to use your ATM card.

Of course you will pay to use it.but you pay with the pre-paid cards as well......

Nothing in life is free (not when it comes to banks anyway ;-)

Check quite how much your DC charges, some banks charge outrageous fees. Search for your card http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/travel/cheap-travel-money and see if it's better than a prepaid card.

Most travellers just use their ATM cards and take the fee hit. Maybe you could open an account with HSBC bank once you get on the road. They are in NYC, Wahington, DC and LA in the USA, and practically noplace else. But if you can get an HSBC account up and running, they have a lot of branches in South America and many places in SEA.
