Xmas Ski trip (Cheap) in Eastern Europe - Where to go?

Hi there,

My friends and i are looking to do a 5 day ski trip over xmas to somewhere cheap with snow. Ive read a few things about Romania, Bulgaria and Slovenia, but if anyone has any sort of advice i would highly appreciate it.

We are wanting to go somewhere where we can get a chalet or similar that we can cater for ourselves in, and somewhere that will have snow for those of us that like to ski/board. We are looking to do this on the cheap so trying to stay clear of highly popular and expensive resorts.

Thanks in advance for any sort of advice you can give me!

Hello
Yes, you will find that Bulgaria, Romania and Slovenia are indeed cheaper places to ski than your typical France Switzerland and Austria. Although you will find, in some cases, that the pistes are not as extensive, as a beginner or intermediate you will find some great new up and coming resorts which will cater for your skiing needs. You can always visit the comparison websites for ski holidays and one which I think would be of use to you would be www.skiholidayquotes.co.uk. You will find companies who offer the lesser known resorts are registered on this site and will be able to assist. happy hunting!

For all the Romanian ones, check out this site: http://www.ski-in-romania.com/resorts.php

Hi,

I am not sure about Romania and Bulgaria, but Slovenia has excellent ski resorts. Check out Kranjska Gora - great slopes and beautiful nature. However, I wouldn't say Slovenia is cheap. Certainly cheaper then Austria or Italy, for instance, but not cheap.

Another alternative would be Bosnia and former Olympic resorts nearby the capital Sarajevo - Jahorina and Bjelasnica. Both offer great slopes, great selection of accommodation that fit everyone's budget, and overall it is much less expensive then skiing in aforementioned countries. Plus, both resorts are close by Sarajevo so you can make a trip downtown in the evening and check out the city.

I would recommend the Prahova Valley in Romania. You have lots of ski tracks, most have artificial snow in case this xmas will be dry (as the last) and night skying is also fun.

It's very easy to get a nice chalet and cater for yourselves, there are literally thousands in the area and it's very common to do that.

Transport is also easy, fly to Bucharest then take the train (around 2-3 hours to get to the Prahova Valley).

I would recommend staying in Predeal or Busteni, both have very nice ski tracks. Not sure how many of you will be going. If your group is around 8-12 or more, you can basically rent a chalet entirely instead of paying for each room, in this case it can get really cheap (around 20 euros per night per person).

I also know that Bulgaria has new and nice ski resorts, but haven't been there yet so can't say from personal experience.

Good luck!
