15If you have say 35 days, then your West Coast / Southwest trip could reasonably occupy say 15, then say six in Miami, and the balance in the Northeast. You also seem to be at the right time for fall foliage in New England - it's very good, so you could have say a week in NYC/DC after Miami, and a week cruising to New Hampshire and Maine. Pretty good trip.

16While I don't necessarily agree with the counterposter about not seeing rain in SFO in the summer (Jan/Feb are the worst for rain, followed by June), I would agree with most of the people on here, that a trip in the West and Southwest in Sep/Oct is going to present you with the mildest weather.
One very important piece of information you leave out is the kind of budget you have available to you. While a rental car can be expensive (depending where you pick it up and whether you pick it up on a weekend), it may be a less expensive option than, say, staying in East Coast cities where decent hotels can cause fainting spells after looking at room rates. It all depends on how you travel and what kind of "luxury" you're used to. Some people travel in RVs. They're not cheap; most of the time, you are not looking at under $100/day; but they are your transportation/hotel in one and are very convenient for covering long distances. Be aware, however, that a week in one of these monsters -- even the small ones --- uses up more gasoline than a third world country does in a month! At an average of $3.50 a gallon of gas in the US, that's a small little fortune.

The National Weather Service says
Back on topic. If you want to go to Yosemite, you need to book lodging immediately, as it can be full. Book here The Wawona Hotel is not in Yosemite Valley, which is where you will probably want to spend most of your time. The site also books the Tenaya Lodge whihc is not inside the park.

OP, if you are heading to xYosemite, please take note of the current hantavirus situation.
It's rare, and I'm not trying to alarm, but you should still take precautions. Generally, take steps so that rodents don't intermingle with your things.
