Heading to Kazan in July 2013, I have a couple of choices in routes.
If I landed in Moscow and traveled overland for a week. What can I expect to find on a linear route to Kazan?
I'm interested in old churches, planned cities, Old Soviet Style hotels.
Can the Golden Circle route be interrupted to join a route to Kazan?
Are there rivers routes to Kazan in any direction?
Thanks in advance.

Kazan is on the Volga river but I don't know if there are still boats that travel this route that aren't cruises. You can take the train to Vladimir, the the bus to Suzdal, the a bus to Ivanovo, the Yaroslavl, then the train to Nizhny Novogord and an overnight train to Kazan.
Alternatively you could travel from Moscow to Abramtsevo to Sergiev Posad to Veliky Rostov to Yaroslavl, etc.
