Pyjamas as ladies daytime fashion in Cambodia

Can anyone explain this phenomena? Never before have I been to a country where I've seen so many people wearing pyjamas all day. Presumably they like them (they'd be comfy).

Nope. So is it spreading? Who started it?

It is much more widespread in Vietnam. In Spain it is common to see women wearing "housecoats", really glorified nighties, and slippers to toddle off to the local shops during the morning. It used to be a normal sight in Northern England and Scotland 50 years ago.

Well I think mostly because the country are not very developed yet so they still have the habit to dress as they like, because nobody cares.

I wish I could do the same here in europe, just being so free!!

Pressa, in Europe one is very free to wear what one wishes. I live in Spain where the men wear shorts and the women very little else for 6 months of the year, only the temperature dictating the change to more modest winter apparel. In Russia, the "european" part, young women wear stunning fashion clothing all year while the old wear pyjamas, nightdresses, overcoats, boots - whatever they want. When I lived in UK I would wear shorts/tee shirt when not at work and I was not alone, comfort was more important than fashion.

Sure the clothes must be handy: light because of the heat, quick to wash and quick to dry, in monsoon season, not require ironing. Also Vietnamese are champions at saving: it's much cheaper to buy an elastic waist that a pant with a zip.

Theres a large town in NZ that made the radio talkback because of girls wearing pjs out at shops, etc. So the habit's spread wide and far.
Must admit I've made the dive into the local shop at night in night attire buying a forgotten ingredient.

Pajamas might be worn around the home or even to market, but nobody would wear them going to work/school or social events.

I took a boat along the Perfumed River and the lady skipper wore pyjamas all day, others cleaning around temples were similarly dressed. Stallholders in several markets across Vietnam were in pyjamas during the day, whether selling or transporting goods about town.

I don't believe being "less.developed" has any general bearing on what people wear; as said above, comfort, practicality and cost have a lot to do with it.

Very common habit in Northern England!

Some schools oop there have banned mothers who turn up to collect their kids in their pyjamas!

In Cambodia and Vietnam it's classed as traditional dress for Woman , i for one quite like it , i used to ask a former Vietnamese Girlfriend of mine to wear them as i think that they look really nice , especially the really brightly coloured psychedelic ones ...

I prefer an ao dai (before some wag makes a comment, for girls not me!), very sexy.

I once asked Vietnamese friends living here what they missed most about Vietnam, and many said: ao dai. And further comments: covers everything but hides nothing. Those modern girls wearing very short pants are not as sexy as the ones with ao dai.
When asking Bangladeshis about what they miss most: the monsoon rain, the fish curries etc.
