2 weeks with 2 year old (& maybe preggers)I have a few weeks off this winter and have some serious travel withdrawal! I was thinking of just taking off to somewhere hot and bringing my little dude with me. We'd be leaving from Québec, Canada and I might be pregnant with #2 by then.
I've been to St. Lucia, Jamaica, Grenada, Trinidad & Tobago, Costa Rica, Belize and Mexico already so I'd like to go somewhere different. Maybe even the US since I've never really been there. Somewhere with a beach hut I can rent, near a town, on a beach and maybe even the choice to rent a car.

1I'm a fan of St. John, part of the U.S. Virgin Islands. It's great for snorkeling and there are a lot of vacation properties you can rent. (I don't know about beach huts, though - they tend to be pricier and more substantial than that.) It's pretty low-key, which I like.
If you want the mainland U.S., maybe Miami, Tampa/St. Petersburg, or Key West?

4Actually in April there is a chance that weather on the entire US gulf coast could be quite nice and beachy. Even in North GA, highs were firmly hovering around 30C in April this year. (Though every year is different!)
It's possible that anything from the NC/SC border all the way through TX could be nice in April. College spring break should be over by then, so anyone on spring break will likely be families with children of all ages.
I also second the recommendation of the VI -- either US or British. Neither is particularly cheap, but it may be possible to find yourself an acceptable hut on VRBO or some similar site.
Mexico is such a diverse country -- you can probably find what you want in any part of the Yucatan/Gulf coast once you get away from the melee of the major resort areas. Even the Yucatan itself has quite a diversity of experiences.
I think you have lots of options, and the hard part will be choosing! :-)

5Sanibel island on the gulf coast of southern florida (easy drive from fort myers) might be worth looking into. The beaches are sandy and perfect for shell collecting. You can rent a condo w/ a kitchen and such thats right on the beach. Good restaurants and cute little shops. Rent a bike with a kids seat/ buggy and bike around the island.

6You may want to consider Sanibel Island, Florida. You would fly into Fort Myers which is RSW airport. It is about 15 miles from the airport. Sanibel is know for shelling. In fact, one of the 2 best beaches in the world for shelling. There are 15 miles of beaches, 22 miles of bike paths, great restaurants and NO traffic lights. For more information the Sanibel Chamber of Commerce has a lot of visitor information. They also have daily hotel specials and other discounts on their website. http://www.sanibel-captiva.org Sanibel Island Visitor Information
