Traffic police in Ukraine (DAI)
I wonder what the purpose of the DAI is other then accepting bribes from car drivers. They don't seem to be contributing in any way to road safety in Ukraine (which doesn't exist). They just stand at checkpoints and at some hidden locations to take bribes from people.I'm driving around Ukraine at the moment in my rented car and have been stopped by them three times, two times it was a fake traffic offense which they had made up, so I let them start the paperwork and they just quit after a while when it becomes clear I don't give them a bribe. The third time however, I did make a traffic offense and I was caught, pulled over and was told it would cost me 500 UAH which I had to pay immediately at a police station about 50 km back from where I just came. I didn't believe a word of that story especially because 500 UAH seemed a bit much to me, anyway as it was late, after a very long day and I had two small children in the car I just wanted to move on, I sat down with the traffic cops in their car and they let me go after I made a payment considerably less then the UAH 500.
It all made me wonder whether they ever write out real tickets and why they exist in the first place

My passenger told me that she was fined 500 UAH for that, the length of bandage in her medicine cabinet was not 1.30 meters but only 0.50 meters. The money policeman took it in his pocket. She has not received a receipt for the fine.I am not surprised that you was stopped and you spent your time. This happens often if foreigner is driving in Ukraine.

I now also had to pay Hertz at Boryspil a bribe as they found a dirty spot on the interior of the car which had to be cleaned. I could choose €80 on my credit card or a much lesser amount in cash. I've rented a lot of cars with Hertz and was never charged for cleaning and I have returned some very dirty cars in the past.4
I found Hertz OK. My rented car in Zaporozhye got scratched while parked. They just altered the inspection diagram to show that it had been there when I took the car, and charged nothing. Also I got a better car than I booked, so no complaints. As for police, I got stopped for no reason, but waved on when I said I was English. I always found a great welcome everywhere. For example, I took a taxi Dnepropetrovsk to Zaporozhye, about 500UAH with English speaking guide, outstanding value and she insisted on staying with me outside the apartment until my girlfriend turned up with the key. Who could ask for more?

I just drove my own car through Ukraine for 10 days and didn't have 1 problem or get stopped once
