Tortuguero

Anyone interested in wildlife and thinking about where to go in CR...this is a good time to go to Tortuguero.

I arrived here yesterday and went out on a turtle trip last night.I wasn't sure whether to bother as I have seen the egg depositing process before..in Malaysia and in Indonesia.

This was something else! At one point we (4 people plus guide) were rooted to the spot,on the beach, with 7 different giant turtles moving around us....depositing eggs, covering nests, walking to and from the sea.

We saw at least 10 different turtles in a couple of hours...mostly green but one hawksbill as well.....the night sky was amazing (no rain yesterday!)....and on the walk to and from the beach we also saw plenty of cool stuff like very large wolf spiders, gaudy frogs etc.

Today we will go for day and night hikes so hopefully see more interesting stuff ;-)

lucapal - my favorite thing to do in tortuguero is to hire (or use since some hotels let you use one for free) a canoe or kayak. with a canoe, i will usually hire some young man from the community to paddle -- not really a "guide" although that would be good too, if more expensive.

this way, i can leisurely visit the river and canals the way i want to and not with an organized tour. the fact that the kayak or canoe is very quiet will also allow you to "sneak up" on wildlife many times.

lizards, frogs, caimans, birds, and several species of monkeys - you should see all of that during a canoe/kayak trip.

glad you enjoyed the turtle nesting. i also always check the beach really early the next morning because you can often see little stragglers of hatchlings making their way to the water.

how did you get from monteverde to tortuguero? what was that like?

The canoe is a good idea...I'll do that tomorrow morning I think.

We were lucky as we met a guy in Monteverde who was driving to San Jose very early....he even dropped us at the Gran Caribe bus station just in time for the 9am bus to Cariari. For free.....I offered him some money for petrol but he refused it....
